UNIONDALE, N.Y. - Bass Pro Shops, an outdoor retailer specializing in hunting, fishing, camping and other related outdoor gear, is proud to announce plans for a new store in Uniondale, New York. The Bass Pro Shops retail attraction will be the lead tenant of Blumenfeld Development Group and Forest City Ratner’s newly designed and renovated Nassau Coliseum and surrounding development project in Uniondale, New York. The site is adjacent to the Roosevelt Field mall and retail node. An opening date for the new 80,000-120,000 square-foot Bass Pro Shops store will be announced at a later date.Bass Pro Shops to open fourth New York store in Nassau County on Long Island

This will be the company’s fourth store in New York as they currently operate stores in Auburn and Utica; while a new location was announced for Victor.

“We are very grateful for the opportunity to be the lead anchor tenant for this exciting new development,” said Johnny Morris, founder of Bass Pro Shops. “Our mega outdoor store will be a tribute to the great sporting tradition and heritage of the region and a celebration of the sporting men and women of New York.”

Considered by many to be one of the strongest retail areas in the country, the Nassau Coliseum and Sports and Entertainment district is located in the heart of Nassau County—a suburban county on Long Island. The area surrounding the project is densely populated with more than 18 million people living within 50 miles. The new Bass Pro Shops retail store will front Hempstead Turnpike which, along with the other roads surrounding the site, has an excess of 30 million cars each year.

Nationally, Bass Pro Shops will host more than 116 million people visiting their 89 stores and marine centers across America and Canada this year. The average customer stays 2 ½ hours and drives an average distance of 50+ miles. Bass Pro Shops was named by Advertising Age magazine as one of the Top 10 Hottest Brands in America along with name brands such as Old Spice, M&M’s, iPad and Droid. Also, Bass Pro Shops has been recognized numerous times for their conservation and outdoor education efforts.

“Blumenfeld Development Group and Forest City Ratner are proud to announce Bass Pro Shops as the lead tenant to the newly designed and renovated Nassau Coliseum and surrounding development,” said Ed Blumenfeld of Blumenfeld Development Group. “We have come up with a unique and exciting product to support the resurrection of Nassau Coliseum. We plan to build a vibrant sports and entertainment venue that will bring life back to the area. As we develop the coliseum with concerts, college sports programming and other family oriented programs, Bass Pro Shops is the perfect anchor tenant to support our vision for this new innovative development. This is a huge benefit to Nassau County; Bass Pro Shops has many existing customers who live on Long Island but have to shop elsewhere. Now people will be able to shop easily in the county and the county will collect sales tax dollars that are being spent in other states.”

Bass Pro Shops unique, award-winning, mega-sized outdoor stores are known for combining retail with entertainment, conservation and outdoor education. More than just a fishing and hunting store, the Bass Pro Shops store will also offer equipment and clothing for hiking, backpacking, wildlife viewing, camping, and other related outdoor gear. A gift and nature center features a wide variety of outdoor-related items from lamps and dishes to bird feeders and furniture. Expansive boat showrooms offer Tracker, Nitro, SunTracker, Tahoe, Grizzly and Mako boats built by Tracker Marine Group, the world’s largest manufacturer of fishing boats.

Bass Pro Shops Dedication to Conservation

Bass Pro Shops lodge-like exteriors and outdoor-themed interiors make them popular with customers. The outdoors feel is brought indoors through massive log and rock work, large indoor aquariums and water features stocked with native fish species as well as an extensive collection of museum quality fish and wildlife mounts. Historic photos and exhibits will pay tribute to the region’s great outdoor heritage.

Since the beginning, Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris has been dedicated to inspiring people, especially youth and families, to love, enjoy and conserve the great outdoors. That commitment, demonstrated over the course of several decades, is a big reason why Bass Pro Shops is known as the outdoor industry’s corporate conservation leader. Bass Pro Shops’ has partnered with and supports the efforts of many organizations that work to conserve and manage the nation’s natural resources. The company’s key conservation initiatives include fish and wildlife habitat improvements, conservation and outdoor skills education, improving water quality and quality of our lakes and springs, and conservation advocacy.

That sounds pretty good! It's just that aren't most of their shops more fresh water fishing oriented?

So I wonder how well they will do on LI? I'm sure that this shop will be not their typical business model.

Another thought,I wonder if they will be authorized to sell the high end fishing reels?

I'm pretty sure that the few Bass Pro shops that I have visited basically had the medium priced spinning stuff.

Lastly, for the small Mom & PoP tackle stores this probably is not a very happy event.

Oh well--- that's capitalism.

That will squeeze some of the smaller guys hard.

Most shops make their living selling bait, wrapping rods and servicing reels, but you have to sell Bombers and stuff in order to bring traffic into the store in the first place. That's where it'll pinch. Does BP offer custom rod building and good bait in their other locations?

I for one will never go into this store

I support local guys like paulie , li outdoorsman, bobs, bay park, and all the other little guys

this home depot will ruin our local shops

the only good thing is the Suffolk shops shouldn't be affected and hopefully the Nassau guys wolnt go cause its near the mussolium

I hope there bunker is fresh and there beachmasters stocked

because if you support this store its gonna be harder to find a place to get your favorite items

Ok as to the salt water question. Bass Pro shops runs the World Wide Sportsman in Islamorada Florida. Along with the marina for flats guides and even the famous Islamorada Fish Company restaurant. I do think the store will hurt some of the small tackle stores. Just remember it will be like going to any big box store ( Dicks ) where the clerks don't have a clue what you are talking about.

I've been to the one in Las Vegas and even there, their SW department was pretty well stocked with the basics.

The World Wide Sportsman in Islamorada was awesome. Bass Pro did sell high end spinning and conventional tackle by the big brands as well as Van Stall.

More importantly will this help bring my Islanders back to LI? ;)

BrianBM brought up some sad but harsh realities.

Most people who walk into tackle shops I frequent fall into two basic camps. There's the small clique of guys who have known the owner for decades, but has pretty much all he needs so he just goes there to chat. The other are the guys and gals who just wanna wet a line, and will buy the sundries like fresh mono, Bombers and other staples. The latter group is what keeps the doors open for business. If that demographic can get cheaper line and basic lures at BPS, they're going to spend their money there instead.

I think it is a good thing for Long Island but it will hurt the small local B&T . I'm pretty close to there and I do go to Dick's for some things but most of my purchases have been from Bernies in Sheepshead Bay. Great service and very knowledgeable, I don't think you'll get the same knowledge and experience with the local fishing scene from BPS .

Met Jimmy Houston at one, totally awesome dude. Also had an indoor clinic teaching my son how to fly cast.   Everyone is caught up with the speculative "economical" impact it will have or the "employees" with no clue. The store will be located in the middle of the island, so my guess is that their bait (for those who enjoy throwing the meat) will suck. All points and opinions are valid and possibly might come to fruition. I happen to look at it as the glass half full.

I personally have bought 3 of my reels from BPS as well as my newest rod for the beach last week.  Their customer service and return policy is awesome. One of the reels I purchased earlier this year was what I thought defective, they replaced it no questions asked. The replacement I received had the same issue, they took it back and I'm not waiting on a replacement reel. Different brand and type. They gave me the option to get anything I wanted. Just last week I was in the PA store, first time in a BPS and I thought their salt water collection was good for being in the middle of PA.

As for local B&T's, I support them as well, a lot more :D and will always support them. I can't walk out without dropping several $$$. Last year someone warned me about the addiction and the temptation in buying everything under the sun.  I don't think it will hurt local B&T since there going to be in central nassau. I personally like going to the local B&T and getting great advice. Nothing like having someone who can pass on a few pointers to a newbie.

Keep what you can eat, The rest set them free to fight another day.
