So I was fishing on the beach today and some guy was using 2 rods. He said something about a 2 rod stamp. My reply was the stamp is only good for freshwater fishing. He says he can use any number of rods on the beach.

Anyone able to tell me the actual rule on this? Am I allowed to have 2 lines in the water while fishing the beach?

28.65. GENERAL. Except as provided in this article, fin fish may be taken only on hook and line or

by hand. Any number of hooks and lines may be used in all ocean waters and bays except:

(a) San Francisco and San Pablo bays between the Golden Gate Bridge and the west Carquinez

Bridge, where only one line with not more than three hooks may be used.

(b) On public piers, no person shall use more than two rods and lines, two hand lines, or two nets,

traps or other appliances used to take crabs.

Regs state "any number" but Mike's word choice "manage" is key.  Keep in mind that if you actually harvest your catch and you are fortunate enough to catch a limit of good sized bass and a limit of perch plus a bonus hali during an outing, you would have to "manage" carrying multiple poles, equipment, and 20+ lbs of fish back to your vehicle.  If your trek to the "honey hole" includes a hill and miles of sand then managing becomes more complex.  Two fishing outfits will likely suffice:  one for bait fishing with the pole in a stand and the other for casting lures, grubs, or sand crabs as an active pass time.  When carrying multiple poles over distance, you should strap the tips together because bouncing of the rods against one another can damage the rods.

One pole or more, be sure to enjoy the fresh air, beautiful scenery, sunrise or sunset, and the pull of fish on the other end of the line.   Go get 'em!

Back before I move down to the Southwest I used two rods in the Delta. One of them was a five weight fly rod and the other was my live bait rod(when I was going to use plugs((artificial lures))) I didn't use my fly rod. I was using just three fly patterns( Yellow floating spider made from foam, mesquite, and blue wing olives) that I used in the winter. All of the flies where floating and where just for pan fish that I used to bait my live bait rod. It was more fun to fish for the pan fish than for the larger bait eating fish like stripers. mosquitoes worked best and the hooks I used for them where from size 22 all the way up to size 8's. I lived in Tracy and during the summer I had four spots that I could fly fish and get sun fish at night from including small channel catfish with these fly patterns. When I was plugging I only took one rod with a bunch of plugs and lures targeting stripers ;)
