Silly questions by noobies

I fall can't keep track of the silly questions I've gotten over the past I am afraid to say how many years fishing the surf. However, the other day, as I am washing the sand off a fish that I decided to keep for the table, a guy who just arrived at the beach, and who had on all the nice shiny duds and a shiny new truck and shiny reels and stuff yells over, "hey, what did you get him on?" I happened to be standing in front of my truck with the racked Legend that still had a swim shad very obviously still attached. I thought he should have been a bit more observant. Then came the old standby, "can you give some tips on how to catch them?" To which I gave him my stock answer, "you gotta put in your time". He actually got pissed.

Oh well can't please everyone.

I always ask any luck when walking the beaches with my wife in the warmer months. Sometimes they politely answer and I can give them a few pointers. Sometimes they are using a technique I'm not familiar with and I pick up valuable info. It helps to be friendly because we were all new at one point and there are enough dicks on the beach. I choose not to be one of them, unless you crowd me. Then it's on!

Nice to mix it up a bit "How was the catch", "Have any fun", "Did you score?" "Good bite today?" I think it shows you're not simple minded and an intelligent conversion may ensue.

I always thought of "Any luck?" as the polite, non-rude way of asking, "Did you catch anything?" It gives the person being asked room to answer with as much or few specifics as he wants. It's certainly not rude.
You're right. Not rude. I just think "any luck?" or "catch anything" are sort of non-fisherman inquiry. I politely say yes or no. But if someone asks me "how was the bite", I'm more inclined to elaborate and maybe learn something myself. It's happened many times actually.

"Any luck" or "Did you catch anything" typically ends with "No its pretty slow today" even on day's I'm catching.

Not really newbs to "fishing" per se but I have had random people come up to me in shock saying "You caught THAT from the beach?!?!?" Like the ocean is one big wet expanse of emptiness unless you're on a boat out deep...

I think it scares them a bit to learn what habitates their swimming area.

Id rather have to deal with a newbie ask me a stupid question then have to deal with another "wanna be pro asshat" that thinks their crap doesn't stink. I was fishing out front near a jetty that I have fished a thousand times before about a month ago when a guy came off the jetty and walked directly behind, I turned and said " hello, how ya doin"? He said to me " WHY ARE YOU TALKING TO ME!!!???" Now I fish this stretch of beach almost everyday ( its right down the street from my house) and Ive never seen this guy before, and I hope I never see him again. *** is wrong with some people? People just seem to get nastier and nastier every year.

Please practice CPR.....Let them go, let them grow.:howdy:

Why do people feel they have to be such hard-a**es. Share a little knowledge, teach them about respecting other anglers and the rights and wrongs, keeping shorts and how to release a fish. It's fishing, not cancer research! If I ran into this guy 40yrs. ago, I would have never bought my first surf rod. I fish because I love the water. I enjoy talking to other fishermen. I like the solitude when I'm on the beach alone at night with just my thoughts or when I'm with my friends enjoying a few laughs. I fish the surf, party boats, friends boats, rivers, ponds, lakes and bays. I have as much fun catching snappers with a bunch of kids as I do reeling in Wahoo off the Outer Banks. Why Do You Fish? Sorry for the rant. It's intended for all the all the" wanna be, screw you, gotta put in your time, I ain't tellin, thinks they know everything sharpies out there.

You're right. You don't have to tell someone everything, like your favorite spot, but we're a community that should share tips and tricks to those who seem committed to the sport. I don't want to contribute to the image of the surly loner fisherman who believes the stock belongs to him. However, I agree with spigola that I will not allow someone to pump me for information with opportunist questions like "what were you using and where were you standing?" I also dislike someone who crowds you when you are hooking up. People also need to learn basic respect. I see that in the surf but it is often lacking at the CC Canal.
