Surfcasterzx2
Fishing for striped bass from the surf (for me anyway) over the years, I have caught Probably a thousand fish….. I can't count on both hands how many were over 25lbs….. Where i fish mostly unfortunately i'm confined to small fish unless of course i go to Montauk which i never really have the opportunity to go, Maybe 1 0r 2 times per season… So anyway Again last night i lost a fish about 30+lbs pounds….I fought him hard in hard current, It was brief but a battle nonetheless… I got the bastard to the inside where the waves were dumping on the shoreline…… I was waiting for the right moment to slide the fish up onto the beach…. So a wave came i used the wave to bring the fish up on the sand, as this happened i walked to grab the leader and the darter pops out the fishes mouth, fish turned and flopped back into the water… And the Screwed up thing was as i got the fish out of the rip close to shore i said to myself i'm gonna lose this fish…… And sure enough i lost the fish…This is probably the 4th time i can remember losing a fish of that size…. It's truly heart breaking and so today i'm feeling sick inside….. Can't stop thinking about it… I will however go back tonite for reclamation….. So Any of you guys experience this?? and does it "haunt" you for a little while??? Lets hear it…..
RoosterSeeker
As someone that Billfished for ten years in Mexico several times a year? I can easier count the successes than I can the failures. Just be happy that you had them on, and count your blessings for every Long Release!!! Surfcasterzx2
You're right Kevin.... But not touching the fish is hard... To me that completes the catch...but you're right, I was lucky enough to have it on... I caught a bunch of fish last night, but that fish was far bigger than any of them... evansc
emptyhook
When I lose one at my feet I count that. Endless you planed on keeping it. It doesn't count. That's just me. I caught my pb 49+ lbs this year and when I looked down I realized how big it was. I'm still in disbelieve that I landed it. When I lose a big fish and didn't even see it. That hunts me all night. If I didn't feel the weight of the fish ( and it a trophy) and it snapped off at my feet I would lose sleep for a few days.
clambellies
The ones you lose will grow in size in your mind as time goes by. On a couple of occasions at the Canal I've been spooled and never even got control of the fish. One time it was jigging and the other time was with a chunk. Each time the fish felt very powerful and just rode the current away with me taking me to the bottom of the spool. As bad as losing the fish was, not knowing what the heck it was is even worst. I thought that fish was a lot bigger than it was, In my head i said ok finally got my PB…. Pulling a big fish out of rip then fighting it to shore can make you think that it's a monster…. But i was still happy enough to see the fish and knowing i fooled it into eating my darter…
John P
How about fishing among the rocks get a gigantic hit and you can't stop it with a 8ft musky rod and 50lbbraid and leader ,Shimamo calcutta 400 locked down. That fish took me to the cleaners. I've been lucky enough to have caught a few 50's and this one was much more powerful. Never got a look,so I'll always wonder what I could have done differently to change the outcome. It is haunting.

hunter123
When I fly fish for trout, If the fish gets off at my feet I count it . I catch and release the trout. The salt, I keep legal fish, If I lose one, Ho well, It's fishing. Now if I'm the reason I lost the fish. Then it's due to a dumb @ss. That's fishing too. Capt, Frank Mundus. The man, the myth, the legand.
Scallywag
End of September last year, I had the biggest hit I've ever had. I had just cast out a bunker head with 4oz off the end of an inlet jetty. The bait didn't even hit bottom before whatever it was slammed it! Almost lost the rod. Whatever it was turned and ran straight out. Drag was screaming! I got whatever it was to turn but it was pulling and shaking hard. I fought it for about 5 min and it was still pulling lots of drag and then SNAP! My knot failed! I have no idea how I would have landed whatever that was so probably better off. I was way undergunned. I would have atleast liked to get a glimpse of what it was. I'm not heartbroken by it but I've never landed a big fish of any kind. Artie Fishil
Everyone is entitled to count fish and estimate it's weight any way they want. For me, if I don't unhook and release it, I didn't catch it. Only a certified scale gives an accurate weight as far as I'm concerned.
woodbuggger21
lost the biggest bass of my life last night. have never had one over 25# but have had ALOT between 20 and 25. this one last night took a danny and ran. had her on for a good 5 min, but as she got close she headed for three big boulders off my right. i clicked the drag 2 more clicks and pulled hard to the left, she shook her head and i pulled the hook. I know had a i let her run I couldve had her, but i also know she couldve cut me off in the rocks. oh well, ill be on the same rock tonight, with the same plug
Tolman25
I guess this is why its called fishing, not catching. As for psychological aftermath I probably have mild ptsd from the sound of a clicker going off or drag screaming. Cant forget the sound of a rod snapping in your face.
