Northern Vermont. Driveway about 24' long plus paths...want to be ale to plow out neighbor too, Medium duty. Want 2 stage. Probably going used.

Friend tells me get the most robust you can afford. The lightweight ones are not worth it.

Ariens? Simplicity? Husqvarna? Particular models?

Thanks

I had really good service from a TroyBuilt that I had in Maine. It was an older one though (bought new in 2003), I've heard the quality may have gone down. The one I had was still going strong last winter in Maine according to a buddy I sold it to.

+3 on electric start.

I'd also recommend moving (to make sure it's easily maneuverable) whatever machine you're considering getting before you buy it.

I have a Simplicity, don't recall model, but it's got 8 HP and 24" clearing width. Also have friends / family that have Ariens, John Deere, Honda and are pretty happy with them as well.

Some other things to keep in mind as you're doing research (options I was looking for with mine):

-Reverse

-Serrated auger

-Metal chute

-Tecumseh snow kings (as Brandford mentioned above)

-Light

Another nice option is to have the chute control / spindle up in the area where your hands are so you can rotate the chute easily.

Good luck!

Ariens for an authorized dealer. Electric start is a must.

Mos def on the electric start.

Why the Tecumseh engine so much better than B&S?

Serated auger better for ice chunks?

Buyu an old Ariens Sno Thro with a blown engine for a hundred bucks and then put a brand new tecumseh from small motor warehouse on it.

Put chains on the wheels.

And yes, if you can't pull the rope on an 8 hp you will need to get electric start or ask your wife to pull it. :p

Here's mine, it rocks:
