BranfordJeff
any decent brand name 8hp/24" will get it done. Make sure it's a tecumseh snow king engine with the huge pull handle. DEFINITELY get electric start.
MikeM58
I had really good service from a TroyBuilt that I had in Maine. It was an older one though (bought new in 2003), I've heard the quality may have gone down. The one I had was still going strong last winter in Maine according to a buddy I sold it to. layer8
+3 on electric start.  I'd also recommend moving (to make sure it's easily maneuverable) whatever machine you're considering getting before you buy it.  I have a Simplicity, don't recall model, but it's got 8 HP and 24" clearing width. Also have friends / family that have Ariens, John Deere, Honda and are pretty happy with them as well.  Some other things to keep in mind as you're doing research (options I was looking for with mine): -Reverse -Serrated auger -Metal chute -Tecumseh snow kings (as Brandford mentioned above) -Light  Another nice option is to have the chute control / spindle up in the area where your hands are so you can rotate the chute easily.  Good luck! BrokenRod
I was shopping around last year and have a recent brouchure from Airens, I'm pretty sure Airens is all Briggs and Stratton engines now and Tecumseh is out of the small engine business. Â Don't forget the benefits of a good dealer nearby. Especially in Vermont.

Mokes
Ariens for an authorized dealer. Electric start is a must. "The toothless, braindead, *********, geriatric mouthbreathers around here love their "safe space". It is the only place in the world where they feel like winners, the gracious thing to do, would be to let them enjoy their delusional reality." -Numbnuts

Why the Tecumseh engine so much better than B&S? Serated auger better for ice chunks? The Great Big Jig in the Sky...Shine on you crazy diamond jig. Billybob
Buyu an old Ariens Sno Thro with a blown engine for a hundred bucks and then put a brand new tecumseh from small motor warehouse on it. Put chains on the wheels. Â And yes, if you can't pull the rope on an 8 hp you will need to get electric start or ask your wife to pull it. Â Here's mine, it rocks: Â
