Ebola, what's the panic?

Should we run around in circles over cancer too?

We do.

Ever see how much fund raising goes into fighting all the different types of cancer?

Billions, easy.

Ebola is new, to us, and folks that rely on the government for protection were let down, again.

And, that is what is behind the fuss.

What's scary is seeing how it's exploded in Africa and the CDC doesn't make anyone feel warm and cozy. They say, what, half a million dead to 1.4 million dead by January? That's pretty scary.

Having blind faith in our Government is beyond stupid. They just let a woman who worked on Duncan go a frigging CRUISE SHIP, lol. Then they are like..."oh...maybe that's a bad idea....."

Thankfully, she's testing negative, but what if she hadn't? How would you deal with a ship loaded with thousands of people?

How many more slip ups like this can we expect? Many I would assume.

As was pointed out before....comparing The Flu to Ebola is nonsense. Mortality rates are apples and oranges.

Not nonsense at all. The flu is FAR FAR more contagious and as a result far more people die from it each year than have ever died from ebola. It's all perspective. Furthermore, unlike Africa, we don't generally lick and fondle our dead. It's their handling of the dead that caused it spread like it did. There is also an outbreak in the DRC this year, but they have been able to contain it to three villages. If they can manage it there, we can manage it here.

I'd say people on a cruise ship have a better chance of contracting cruise ship disease than ebola. They don't even know what happened to all those people for years. Granted it wasn't deadly, but weren't 5000 people getting sick every cruise? Everyone but the crew? What was it, mass seasickness?

Norovirus and it's pretty awful, but I don't think it's deadly. Everybody in my home got it and it put both of my sons in the hospital for a night.

You should spend more time in the Tavern... we can introduce you to Brother Brian :waiting:

Oh and to answer the original question... 60-70 % Mortality rate (and that's for healthy adults...) No vaccine and more questions than answers at this point... probably has a lot to do with the panic...

And until it make's it's way into the country by some other means beyond our reasonable control... Obama will be left holding the bag for it's introduction to the US... so people are panicked and pissed :dismay:

Why all the hand wringing and bed wetting? The flu kills over 20K Americans a year and auto accidents twice that amount.

Too much TV for some?

The US has, what? 300 million?

So if 1/3 get the influenza flavor of the year and 20 k of them die, the percentage is .20?? Or is it .002?

Hypothetically if 100 million Americans contracted ebola, 70 million of them would die as ebola has a mean fatality rate of 70 percent. A minimum of 50 percent up to a maximum of 90 percent fatal.

70 million is a lot of citizens.

This is the reason for the fear.

Some facts to consider, in addition to the above, before minimizing ebola's threat:

Ebola is a Level 4 BioSafetyLevel the most dangerous, if you will.

For comparison HIV, HepB or C, nasty bacteria like staph and typho are a LEVEL 2.

TB and SARS are a level 3

And just speaking from experience the system would and will be QUICKLY overwhelmed.

Hopefully ebola does not spread here, because from a street level view of things, at least in the most heavily populated city/metro region in the US ....we are all ****ed if it does.

The contagiousness of ebola is no where near that of the flu. Even if it were to come here, your scenario is not happening. There's 10s of millions, if not 100s of millions of people in west Africa. Less than 10,000 have contracted ebola thus far. The flu infects 100's of millions globally in less time than the ebola outbreak has been going on.

We shouldn't even need to be discussing this.... that's what pisses me off...

Are you really afraid of an outbreak here because some infected dipchit came over here?

Americans watch too much TV news. Nothing like a good panic to keep the network ratings up and with the lack of hurricanes this year, ebola is working out quite nicely for them. Then there's political angle that the dopes in power are playing and the rubes are biting on it...
