Sudsy
For something as simple as dressing a tail hook a small common shop vise works fine You can get this 2-1/2 in. delaware surfman
I'll also mention you could get a brace and bit hand drill at yard sales flea markets etc. the jaws hold vey tight. It will hold a 8/0 smiling bill no problem. It also hold 4/0 and 5/0 for my teasers. It ratchets and rotates. This is great for seeing both sides of the fly. Great feature for a beginner. It also rotates when you use the Sally Hansen so you don't get drips and runs. I first used this brace and bit held in a vise. Now I have cut down the bent metal handle and welded it to a small c clamp to mount to the table. Total cost under $10 and work great. I'll post a picture when I can get to it, John I just added a picture I cut mine right in front of the handle at the 90 degree bend. Fishit 2
If you don't want to build your own you can find some great deals on the fleabay - I got my order yesterday, a guy was selling two Regal vises with the heavy brass stand along with tons of tying material such as tails, thread, hooks a complete tying setup essentially all for $50. I checked online and some places are selling a vise and base for $315+. I figure ingot about $900 worth of goods for $50.
Jason B
The Terra rotary vise (revised) from plenty of places would fit the bill ($40). Asked the same question few years ago and was suggested and eventually bought it. Works fine for big jigs. http://www.stripersonline.com/t/781737/cheap-vise-for-big-jigs "It's the weekend, I don't know you, you don't exist to me."
