Inlets and eels go together

Egg sinker rig with a 16" leader to a 6/0 Gami. hook the eel up through the bottom of the jaw and out an eye socket. Weight of the sinker depends on the strength of the current.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy

And the eel will work as well dead as alive

I second that rig using an egg sinker.

Not sure how everyone else who claims to fish using eels on an inlet without the sinker but inlet I fish on.. No way possible you could get the eel down any fish able water column without the sinker. Unless it's some variation of dead tide.

Btw what the hell ???? Easy peasy lemon?? What? Hahahahaha!

Also, remember when the initial strike hits hold on and count to 3 slowly then set the hook. Too many times the adrenaline kicks in and you end up pulling the eel right out of the mouth.

Circle hooks work really well in this situation. Let the fish run, then point the rod straight at it and let the hook set itself.

It forces you to take your time.

  • 2 weeks later...

I always found a fish finder to be a better bet. If you have a baitrunner... Tighten the tension on it as hard as possible so it can't tear off line on you. Also, if you ever have a chance... A bottom bouncer rig similar to what is used on walleye works great drifted. Keeps the bait off bottom, and I find I get more strikes.

Good luck!
