Penn Conflict 4000 - Turns "heavy" under load

Hi! I have a new Penn Conflict 4000 loaded with 20# Sufix braid. Since purchasing it new, I've only used it for about 2 dozen casts, and I'm not happy about something. Thought I'd ask if anyone here might have thoughts or observations.

Before I rigged it up, everything was as expected. Turned smoothly, etc, etc. I rigged it up and was throwing plugs with it last weekend - Mag Darters, 1 oz bucktail, SP Minnow...and it is much more difficult to crank the handle than I expected. It's smooth, but it feels like I'm dragging a lot more through the water than I really am. I've had Penn SS reels before and was very happy. I unrigged the reel last night, and when not under load, it cranks fine...easy and smooth. Then I re-rigged it as a sanity check, and sure enough, still stubborn under a 1 oz load.

I checked the rotor nut and it is tight. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Maybe the heavy feeling is because of the 6.2:1 ratio (37" per crank). It looks like this reel is for for fast retrieves on light tackle. I know my ssv5500 feels heavy when cranking big lures compared to a 706z. Maybe its just the small spool and high gearing.

Compared to the slow retrieve of a 706z, sure he will feel more resistance but he's talking about 1oz. I have a Conflict 5000 and it retrieves zig-zags just fine. He's posted about this problem before. Seems he has a mechanical or lube issue. Won't know until he or Penn breaks it down.

Thanks Tony. Do I find that information within the paperwork in the box? Or can I look it up online?

Paul NJ...I did wonder about the possibility of the big gear ratio leading to that feel. But we'll see what PENN says...

Tony...Just a note to say THANK YOU for the prompt attention to this matter. I received the reel yesterday and I will try to give it a run ASAP...though with a busy family schedule the next few days, that's gonna have to wait. I will also take your advice regarding a different line as well. Will let you know the results.

Thanks again! :th:

Darryl, have you tried your new reel?

I decided to break my ssv 4500 down. I degreased everything except the bearings, which were working fine. Used Penn oil in the cleaned out clutch and the spool shaft and Penn grease lightly in the gear box. Spool shaft didn't seem bent but I noticed the smallest amount of perpendicular pressure on the shaft would produce significant resistance. Also changed line to Spiderwire.

That seemed to improve things a bit but I decided to remove the O ring from the handle. That also helped. Still doesn't feel right. Reels freely with no weight but adding 1.5oz feels like your line is looped once over your rod. It's fishable. Caught this one while testing:

1000

But I would much rather reach for my Conflict 5000. Much less resistance on retrieve.

I have not yet fully field-tested, but I did re-rig it with the 1 oz sinker and the new reel seems to have less resistance. I expect to be out on Fri AM for proper testing...and with luck, I will also find some customers to testify during my session. :D

I recently had the same type of problem with my 4000. After using the reel for one and half months all of a sudden it was like fishing with a flat tire. Every turn of the knob it would lock up and then the next full turn the same thing happened, luckily the shop where i purchased it took it back and gave me another, so far there has been no other problems, but the owner told me that 3 out one hundred get returned.  Makes me not want to purchase another penn product/
