SBor02
I am just starting to use lures and I am curious what type of leaders to use for SP Minnows, Kastmasters, and Hopkins Shorty`s? I plan to primarily fish for stripers and blues. Thanks!
MitchellNJ
Wire leaders for blues. 50# mono for stripers most times.
yogiiiboy
Depends on the size rod I use. My light 8 and 9 ft. Rods, I'll use 30 lb fluorocarbon leaders. My 9, 10 and 11 footers....I'll use the 50 or so lb flouro.....
redfin
Yogi has the right idea. Also if your fishing the sand beach your can go on the lighter side and if your fishing jetty or rocky areas, you might want to go up a little in leader strength like 60 or even 80. Usually 30- 50 lb can do most anything. Also, you may want to adjust your leader length according to where you fish too. Hitting a jetty with nothing but 30 inch leaders might be less than ideal. If you can tolerate 4- 5ft can be helpful in these situations.
fishinthedark
Like others have said ,IT depends on the rod I am fishing ,but also where I am fishing. Open sand beach of the south shore I will be throwing lighter stuff most of the time so leader will be shorter 30-36 inches , here I. Do 't need to grab the leader to land the fish I will use the wave action and the rod to get fish in  Out in montauk and point east and north a longer leader 3-4.5 foot leader, because I need to have a longer leader , because I will use the leader to land the fish and the longer leader should discourage one from high sticking a fish My .02 I Fish therefore I Lie
Captain Planet
I use 55lb daiwa boat braid as the mainline tied via red phillips knot to 40lb momoi mono leader. Â Leader is usually around 5' long. Â
SBor02
Thanks for all of the info. I have 30 and 40# fluro and will use them. Do you typically tie right to the lure? I am thinking of using either TA clips or duo locks to make change outs a little faster.

If i'm throwing tins or spoons that will twist the line a ton, it ends up being a small ball bearing swivel. Â
SBor02
Usually a clip.    If i'm throwing tins or spoons that will twist the line a ton, it ends up being a small ball bearing swivel.   Do the small ball bearing swivels have a clip on them or just 2 eyes? I am new to this
redfin
Do the small ball bearing swivels have a clip on them or just 2 eyes? I am new to this  "ball bearing" should have two eyes - the ones with the clip would be called "ball bearing snap swivel" (eye on one side and clip on the other) Hope that helps.  Seldom do I feel the need to use BB swivels in the salt. They are expensive and usually if you are having bad line twist it can be traced back to something else you are doing that can be corrected.
