saltydawg
Apple and Google added al level of security where your data is encrypted and the tech companies cannot access it. This removes the burden from the companies who, in the past, had to release your data to the government once a warrant was presented. Now the tech companies will have only encrypted data. Of course, the FBI is whining already and certainly the NSA is unhappy. Privacy seems to be the enemy of our government. -
Robert Williams
I've always held Apple and Google in high regard. And they just got more points.
fishnmagician
the tech companies were handing it over, and got immunity. not sure why you are giving them a free pass on this. the problem isn't JUST the government. The tech companies handed it over because the government demanded it. This move for encryption of data to protect privacy is a good thing. They may not be able to stop the government from demanding the data but they can keep the government from using what gets handed over with this strategy. Good for them. "pound salt" should be the answer, when demands come without warrants. We allowed a GREAT miscarriage of justice when we allowed the Gov't to sweep this under the rug with amnesty. Plug and teaser
I don't believe it for a second. But it's probably good if the bad guys believe it.

Are you seriously suggesting that if they wanted to play ball with the Gov't like they did a few year back, they wouldn't just hand the data over..... along with the means of decrypting the data? saltydawg
The issue is that even though Google says it would take 5 1/2 years for a computer to break the encryption of a device, the NSA is working on new programs to access encrypted data quickly. You know...the NSA. The ones who are not allowed by law to spy on American people. -

The bad guys (the smart ones, anyway) are using the TOR browser bundle and PGP encryption. The bad guys usually don't do their dirty work using Chrome or the Internet Explorer. I don't think you know very much about encryption technology. It's not that simple unless they employ a really pathetic method of encryption. If it's along the lines of PGP encryption, there isn't any "decryption method" they can hand over the government that will unlock the data. That's the point. With proper encryption, YOU are the only one that can decrypt it because only YOU have the private encryption key for your data. The government wouldn't be whining about it if it was as simple as you seem to think it is.
