fishermanryan
Hello everyone! I have been lurking through google links for some time now, and just decided to join the party. I'm in my second surf fishing season and bought a 10'6" st croix mojo rod. I use a Penn 750ssm w/ 50 # power pro and am throwing 1-3 oz plugs. I usually cast off a jetty or the beach. It seems like I am not casting 25 yards with this setup. The reel seems to heavy or something. I have a penn sargus 5000, and my old man gave me his 705z, and 710z. Should I switch to one of these reels or is there anything out there in the >$200 range. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

Thanks That 750 is a heavy reel for that rod, I think the 710z would be a better match . Try it, it will feel more balance Marc..

dcast
A lighter spinner will help, would also go with a thinner diameter line......technique....technique....technique.
Afrayedknot
Thinner /lighter line will help. Also a lighter reel. That being said it's mostly technique. I started surfcasting 4 yrs ago. This year I'd describe my casting as "competent" . All it took was a lot of time and many thousands of casts. And some catches too! The first thing everyone turns to is their gear. (I did it too). After some large investments I discovered it was me that sucked.
fishermanryan
I'm going to try out the 710z with #30, and work on my technique. At least I'm not loosing as many plugs as I did last year! I finally got my knots down lol Thanks for the advice, much appreciated!
judahL
Not sure which plugs you're using or which 10.5 MOJO you have. Def downsize you're braid. 20 lb for beach and 30 lb for rocks is a decent way to go but probably could cause issues on that big reel. aerodynamic lures like metals in weights that load the rod well help too. There are plenty of reels available for less than 200 that are better suited for braid and distance than anything you're considering. A good idea is pick a reel designed in the last decade
staktup
If you are throwing 1-3 oz and not getting appreciable distance, I suspect the heavy braid and wide spool of the reel may be an issue. Which model rod do you have? The one rated 2-6 oz or the 3/4-4? The former is a broomstick and harder to load while the latter will load much more easily and should launch aerodynamic lures between 1.75-2.75 oz well. If you are not going to dunk it, there are many better casting spinning reels out there. Shimano and Daiwa to name a few; make sure the rotor brake is ultra strong or that the bail is a maually-closing type. I'm looking at a few myself (saragosa or ultegra) to possibly pick up... good luck!
fishermanryan
It's a Mojo Surf 1-4 oz two piece and I've been throwing everything I have in my bag primarily SS Swimmers, needles, whip it eels (4" and 6"), buck tails, and bombers. I guess I'm all over the place, and just need a little guidance. It can be overwhelming to learn this sport on your own, but I'm eager and motivated to do so. cheech
Remove your hooks or get some casting balls and hit the local ballfield. Bring the rod and several reels. Tis better to remain silent and thought the fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.
