Walk down to one of my favorite spots to jig. Nobody around. :)

Walk down the rocks, careful not to turn on my light. Snap on a jig, and begin fishing. I look down current about 75 yards, and can see a guy who appears to be throwing small plugs. No issue, he's nowhere near me, nor me him.

In the middle of my fifth cast, the guy suddenly appears behind me and says 'Hey pal, you're in my spot', and then flashes his light on a rod he had laying in the rocks 10' away I never saw.

I said 'Hey, you were fishing over there. You can't tie up both spots.'

He made it clear he was staying. I looked over his stuff, and saw he was chunking with a heavy sinker, so rather than give him jigging lessons, I packed up and left. But, I wasn't happy. :(

Probably just leave. It's stupid to fish that way imo, but it's not worth fighting with a guy over it either when you've got a lot of Canal to fish. Just pray he gets his rod yanked into the drink later.

It's a no win situation Bob. As soon as he opened his mouth it was over. You know you can't rationalize with him, you don't know if he's dangerous or just blowing smoke. You stay and defend the spot and your mind is off fishing, you move and find another spot and your mind is off fishing. It's a shame that with all that shoreline this crap continues to happen.....

I am not sure what I would have done though I do know what I would have wanted to do...

Was the bait rod fishing or just sitting there as a spot holder?

Makes a little difference I think.

Many guys will plug close to a bait rod they are fishing.

Spot holding with a non fishing rod is pushing it.

This is not all that uncommon these days from what I've seen at the Ditch, especially in the most popular easy access spots. A guy (or guys) will stake out 100 ft of Canal shoreline with rods in holders and then leave them unmanned and unfished while they go off to sleep in the car or whatever. In the "old days," at least one of those rods would "disappear." ;). But more often, the guy doing it will not be very far away, usually within eyeshot of the rods. Then you need to decide how much you want to deal with a confrontation over a spot that no one is fishing. :dismay:

The rod wasn't even fishing. It was laying in the rocks some 10' from where I was. He had some little cooler there with his bait in it which I never saw either.

Real awkward situation at first. I felt odd b/c I was placed in that position. After thinking about it for a moment, I thought giving him free jigging lessons would have only complicated things if I decided to remain and began taking fish.

Yeah, that's a tough one especially at night.

Think you did the right thing though, poor form on his part.

you made the right choice Bob, although it's not necessarily the one I would have made... I consider a spot "saved" if you have a rod spiked with line in the water or are in close enough proximity to your gear that there's no confusion you intend to fish... 75 yards away fishing from the rest of your gear is fair game, especially at night ...

Ask yourself what would you have done if you were him. You are fishing and there is no one around. You get to a spot and set down your stuff. Then see a few fish break a bit down current. You hustle down there and throw a plug for a while. Upon returning you bump into a guy who has come to the spot where you first set up.

Now I agree that "hey pal, you're in my spot" would have ticked me off but once I saw the guy was somewhat entrenched in the spot I would have moved. In my opinion you did the right thing but I don't think it makes the guy a moron etc. as mentioned.

I am old but I'm slow.
