Today was the first full day of the fall season for 2014. Today would also be the last day of the 2014 season for Rod and I to get out on his boat because by the time I return to fish for Stripers again his boat will be out of the water.

I don't know what the temperature was when we left the dock and when you put on three layers to keep warm I think it is a case of I don't want to know how cold it is. It was not freezing but when your running in a boat, the wind chill can be nasty.

We left the dock around 6:15 after our Dunkins stop and where on our first spot by 6:40 am and Rod was hooked up shortly after that. The fish we found were in the same place we fished two days earlier and were in to 20 to 24 inch range with few bigger.

The Betsy also worked her magic in the harbor today.

The low was at 5:30 am so we had an incoming tide all morning. The wind was very light and around 7:30 the wind laid down to almost nothing. The best part was the wind stayed down all day. The weather today was absolutely perfect.

The first area we fished was a lot of fun and after we landed over 20 fish but things slowed and we decided to go to a area that we had received a report on earlier in the morning. Rod and I are firm believers in you don't leave fish to find fish. I don't fish the harbor very often but I do know from my few experiences out there when you get a intel report and you go to that spot it is over very shortly after you arrive or it ended just before you get there.

When our fish shut down we then proceeded to the intel spot and the boats were there as well as huge pods of Pogies. We could see the Pogies all around and at times the fish finder screen was virtually filled with bait. We never did see any fish breaking on the bait but we did mark a number of good fish below the bait but most were deep in 30 to 40 feet of water.

Rod and I decided to go to some big Pogie flies and Rod was the first to finally get a fish to eat. We estimated this fish to be around 34 inches.

I will say one thing when a Striper wants to eat a big fly they don't have a problem wolfing it down.

We worked the bait pods for a long time but it was very hard to get another fish to eat. With that much bait around you have to think how many big Pogies can on bass eat before it is full and now is not just not on the feed. It really was a situation that with that much bait around a bass could eat when ever it wanted to and did not have to go very far to do it.

When I say these were big Pogies I am saying between 1.5 to 2 pounds. We did snag some on the strip because there were so many and at first you were not sure what you had because if you got one of the fish broadside the resistance in the water alone made it feel like you had a god fish in the beginning.

Rod had a very interesting experience, he snagged a Pogie while stripping in his fly and as soon as it started to fight, it was nailed by a big Bluefish but unfortunately it cut the leader at the boat. It was a big Bluefish.

We had given up on casting the big flies because they wear you out after an hour of more and we could not get any more fish with them so we went back to our more traditional size flies.

We just kept casting and Rod connected again and at first he thought he snagged another Pogie but it did not take long for him to say ":This ain't no Pogie ". This fish put Rod through his paces and I don't know how long the fight took but it was a long one and he had to sit and rest after the fight. The poo old man.

Boga Time and it is over 14 pounds !

We fished until 3:30 before quitting and finally arrived back at the dock at 4 pm. It was a great weather day and I told Rod these are the kind of days you only get once or twice a year when you can spend the entire day on the water in a boat and have no wind.

After washing down the boat it was off to Dunkins ! :D.

Hey, let me pick your brain.  I was down to about a 2.5'leader and tippett and noticed I couldn't really get the fly to sink.  I put on  15LB 7.5' 0x (should I be using something different?) leader and am now casting about 8'-9' foot leader and tippett.  Now my problem-w/the shorter leader/tippett I was getting pretty good at casting, but now w/the longer, leader I'm back to square one.  I noticed the fly actually coming from underneath my armpit at times (little wind).  So how long should I have my leadertippett?  Also, what weight should I be working with?  Thanks

You don't say whose brain you want to pick.

If you are using a 15# leader all the way then it is way too light.

For a #10 rod I use a butt of 4' of 60#. Then something like 50#, 40# 30# and then tippet. Total length is 9-10'.

For a #8 rod I would start with 50# for butt and go down from there.

Your casting will improve.

YF leaders basically fall under the KISS theory for most salt water fishing for Stripers. You can do it two ways, buy a commercial leader and I would just go to a 9 foot 20 lb test Striper leader. This the leader this is the more expensive way to go., but ok if you don't fish a lot;

The second is to make your own, For stripers I make my leaders all 9 to 10 feet. For me all I use is 4 ft of 30 pound test, 2 feet of 25 pound test and 4 feet of 20 pound test. Perfection loop on the 30 pound, connect other end to 25 pound with a blood knot and a perfection loop on the end of the test.25. Now make a tippet of 20 pound test with a perfection loop and after you make the loop cut it to 4 feet long and connect it to the 25 pound using the loop to loop connection. When that tippet gets to short replace it with another.

Best way to make these is buy bulk spools of each size.
