Don't know why people bad mouth them so much. They are ship load of fun to catch.

They are a lot of fun to catch. They also destroy sluggos or any soft plastics, crap up the boat with scales, throw up what they were eating all over the boat, taste like ****, bite, destroy equipment, loaded with PCBs and other bad chemicals, taste like crap, but they are fun to catch. Just remember, before releasing them to slit their throats first. :th:

I was fishing eels last night so I was not liking the blues being around. I did manage 8 stripers, all keepers, most in the 34-38 inch range with a couple in the low 40 inch range. All of my eels eventually got cut to pieces except 1 eel that held together even after being zip tied to the hook and still took nice fish.

It all started last year during a terrible thunderstorm, when I locked myself out of the house. Shelving myself with a large piece of sheet metal, I ran for cover under the tallest tree I could find!

Big blues are a blast to catch on flies or poppers. As for eating them, I either do them smoked or as described below:

Leave fillets skin on

lay fillets down on a wooden plank, skin side down

sprinkle with salt, pepper and paprika to taste (or vary this with cajun seafood spices or whatever the voices tell you)

lay raw bacon strips over fillet, pretty much covering it

lightly hammer roofing nails through bacon strips and fillets to anchor them to the plank

stand plank upright in fire pit, about 2' from a good base of hot coals

drink beer

drink more beer

enjoy fillets

Best bluefish ever. Drains the oils from the bluefish, replacing it with bacon grease.
