What's a decent cheap whiskey?

My friend from high school who now lives in Dubai visits me once a year around August/September. He usually brings me a litre of whiskey every year when he visits me. This year, looks like the price of some of my favorite scotch went up a bit. So I just asked him to bring me a litre of Jim Beam and a litre of Jack Daniels.

Now that our bruddah from Kentucky is empty as we speak, while there is still a couple of more ounces left in my glass while I'm sipping it neat as we speak.... I don't feel that distinct taste of bourbon when I drink it neat when compared to drinking it on the rocks. Haven't opened the JD yet, but saving that for my week long trip to Goa toward the end of the month.

I'd love to taste some of that Laphraoigh, Mc Allan or Highland park, but with the prices/taxes going up, I guess I've got to learn a bit about other "Options". Have always liked Jameson, but would like to know what else you got along those lines....

Cheers!

Makers Mark, Knob Creek, Wild Turkey 101, Early Times 354 are some of the ones I've had so far. I haven't had any whiskey in a while but I'm looking to get a bottle again soon. I don't know if they are cheap enough for you. What is the price range?

Maker's Mark is the same price as JD and is better. For the money, johnny black is good too. Get the 1.75 liter.

Something along the lines of Laphraoig, Highland Park (10 Years), Mc Allan, Glenlivette (15 years) were on budget, but that's getting harder. I've got to pay about $40 (US) for a (750 ml) bottle of Jameson here. I guess you now know what I'm talking about....

Wow, I think a fifth of Jamie is less than $30 here. $40 will get you a bottle of knob with change left for beer.

I think I remember buying Jameson for around $24 for a bottle in 2012 from wines and spirits in PA. $40 was for those Scotch I mentioned earlier. But again, have you looked at the recent prices?

Heaven Hill was always a really good cheap Bourbon, much better than JD.

I prefer Bushmills or Jameson—in that order—over scotch, but Dewar's White Label Scotch is good by me and it costs around $22, about half of the average for all Scotch Whiskey.

I drink it; I wouldn't know anything about the following.  I got this from the About search engine:

Dewars White Label blended Scotch whisky is one of the top selling blended whiskies in the world. Once you taste Dewars, it is easy to see why. Not only is Dewars mild, sweet and easy drinking, without a big smoke component that drives many drinkers away from Scotch whisky, but it also mixes exceptionally well. From a Scotch and soda to an elegant Blood and Sand Cocktail, Dewars is versatile, attractively priced and a great introduction into the world of blended Scotch whisky.

Nose

On the nose, Dewars White Label offers up a gentle bouquet of ripe pears, warm butterscotch, oak and just the slightest hint of smoke. A touch of Scottish heather looms in the background, but overall this is a light, fruity bouquet.

Body and Palate

Dewars White Label is delicate on the tongue. It is not meant to be a mouthcoating monster of a Scotch whisky, instead, Dewars White Label dances nimbly across the palate, offering quick pinpricks of light malt sugar, pears, Madagascar vanilla, honey and a whisper of peat smoke.

Finish

On the finish, Dewars White Label offers a relatively quick finish that is predominately vanilla and honey. A longer finish would make this a far less versatile blended Scotch. As it is, the quick finish offers just enough sweet notes to satisfy those who drink it neat or on the rocks, while the lack of a long, lingering finish means that it blends into cocktails exceptionally well without throwing the balance of a drink off.

As it is, Dewars White Label is one of the best selling blended Scotches in the world for a pretty simple reason. It is quite good and can be one of the most versatile whiskies in your liquor cabinet. If you are looking for just one Scotch to keep in your liquor cabinet, Dewars would be the perfect choice.

At my age, just about everything pisses me off!

Try a bourbon named Bulleit.

Get a pint, just to see how it tastes to you.

Suits me fine, and a couple bucks cheaper than the 'big boys'.

Edit:

From the website.

In 1987, Thomas E. Bulleit, Jr., fulfilled a lifelong dream of reviving an old family bourbon recipe by starting the Bulleit Distilling Company. Inspired by his great-great-grandfather Augustus Bulleit, who made a high-rye whiskey between 1830-1860, Tom left a successful law practice and risked everything to experience life on the frontier.

Today, we're not the only ones who are glad he did.

A whiskey nearly lost forever.

A tavern keeper in 1830s Louisville, Kentucky, Augustus Bulleit was dedicated to a single goal: the creation of a bourbon unique in flavor. After experimenting with countless varieties in small-batch trials, he finally came upon a bourbon with the character he had long sought after.

One fateful day, while transporting his barrels of bourbon from Kentucky to New Orleans, Augustus Bulleit vanished. What happened is still unknown, and his creation nearly disappeared into history along with him.

A legend today.

To this day, Bulleit Bourbon is distilled and aged in small batches. High rye content gives it a bold, spicy character with a distinctively smooth, clean finish. Kentucky limestone-filtered water provides a foundation for the bourbon's character, while charred American oak barrels lend a smoky backbone. Our aging philosophy is simple: we wait until our bourbon is ready.

As Bulleit enthusiasts know, rye has always been our cornerstone. In this tradition, we're proud to present Bulleit Rye – a small batch, straight rye whiskey made from 95% rye and 5% malted barley. It's a whiskey with unparalleled spice and complexity.

Material abundance without character is the path of destruction.
