"...obesity is a leading cause of ineligibility for service..." [military service]

"More than 70 percent of those in the 17-to-24 age range in all but five states are ineligible for service, according to figures in the report provided by the Defense Department.

Even the best-performing states have less-than-impressive numbers; the lowest ineliginility rate in the nation is Hawaii’s, at 62 percent, followed by a four-way tie at 69 percent between Connecticut, Minnesota, Washington and New Jersey.

Four states and the District of Columbia have 75 percent or more ineligibles, led by Mississippi at 78 percent."

"Some of the 450 retired generals and admirals who make up Mission: Readiness are visiting Capitol Hill to distribute the document and to lobby lawmakers in support of the Obama administration’s overhaul of school meals, first passed in 2012, which requires schools to serve more fruits and vegetables and less salt and sugar."

The Republican Response:

"In May, the House Appropriations Committee passed a spending bill that would allow school districts with lunch and breakfast programs operating at a loss to seek a one-year waiver on certain federal nutrition requirements."

The strict physical requirements is of the reasons the volunteer Armed Forces are surperb. 99.9% of volunteers have High School diplomas. Speaking English is is also required.

nipsip - The too fat brigade can slim down, graduate from High School and learn to speak English. If you are attempting to say the requirements listed above are unfair, the individual can correct all of the above.

With a base of 310 million or more, the nation isn't hurting for volunteers to fill the nations needs. The Democrats are downsizing the military as well and the level of recruits is being adjusted downward to allow the welfare millions of dollars to grow at the expense of our national interests.

A video with millions of hits in just 3 days. It explains why most Americans love their citizen volunteers who are defending this Nation.

Imagine a military full of vegan *******.

They can get paid in celery instead of salary. :D :D

Politicians and diapers should be changed often and regularly,  invariably for the same reason.

With delayed entry plans, there's no reason a kid couldn't get himself to a weight that would get him or her in, unless they were morbidly overweight. If they were that overwieght, I doubt they would be looking to go into the service anyway. I don't know what the standards are today, but when I went in they would allow people who were a certain percentage over the weight standard with the understanding that they had to make weight to graduate basic training (this was in the Army). All the guys on the "fat guy" program made weight easily at the end of basic in my platoon. The only guys that washed out for PT reasons were weaklings who couldn't do enough push-ups, the lazy guys who couldn't pass the 2 mile run time, or the sissies who couldn't finish the 20 mile road march. None of those guys belonged in the service to begin with, but all got the option to "recycle" and try again, or go home with a general discharge. Not sure how it works today.

All that being said, throwing a ton of money into school lunch programs won't make up for the lack of physical activity that leads to these over weight kids to begin with. I saw plenty of thin guys that couldn't do push ups, climb a rope or complete a two miles run, while I knew plenty of guys with a bit of a belly who could.

Now tell us what precentage of applicants are denied because of being too fat.

It's funny how you can take one sentence like... "...obesity is a leading cause of ineligibility for service..." [military service]"

and combine it with a report about the percentage of people that are eligible for service in different states like this... ""More than 70 percent of those in the 17-to-24 age range in all but five states are ineligible for service, according to figures in the report provided by the Defense Department."

And get stupid people to think that you told them that 70 percent of all people between 17 and 24 are too fat to join the military. This is why the democrat strategy of winning by pandering to the dumbest 50% of the country is actually brilliant. Stupid people are easy to fool.

MikeMunn, I think you might be wrong.    ;)

Those with interests overseas will damn well make sure that an all volunteer service remains viable.

The demographics of a nation with over 300 million people will keep the citizen volunteer service full. The ranks have been full for the past 14 years. Every volunteer knew at the time they took the oath to Protect and Defend this Nation from enemies abroad and at home after 9/11/2001 that there was good chance that they would be serving in a combat zone. You can see it in their faces. They are proud to serve. Especially when the threat of and expanding level of fanatics who believe in butchering those of the Muslim faith who disagreed with their perverted beliefs.

Nipsip - you just posted a set of facts. did you have a point to make or a question answered? I thought that was a requirement for posting on this site. You think the school lunch program is the fault of the Republicans?

There are school districts who after a couple of years of the Michelle Obama lunch program have elected to go in another direction. What would you solution be? Mandatory physical fitness programs to help the over indulgent, high sugar junkies a chance to volunteer for the military?

If they fail the physical, you know they can work out, lose weight, firm up muscles and re volunteer if they want to serve hard enough. Don't you?

Only 1 in 4 young Americans is too heavy to join. That means most of the 70 percent of young Americans ineligible are ineligible due to other causes and the other causes are: Inadequate education or a criminal record.

Of course, I don't know how they count people who are too fat, too stupid and also have a criminal record, but I think if we're really concerned about military eligibility, we should consider attempting to remedy the problems of inadequate education and too adquate lack of character (that causes them to have criminal records).

Its absolutely amazing how the mouth breathers think on this issue, even when couched in a concern they should care about, national security. I know many of you, at least since Michele Obama became first lady, see another clause in the bill of rights saying something like "the government shall not impede the citizen's right to consume lard, sugar, salt and all things tasty and delicious". Ok, keep going down that road. Enjoy the metabolic syndrome, the diabetes, the coronary artery disease. Be the slave of McDonalds, ADM, Monsanto, General Foods, etc. But please OWN the fact that YOU are the issue with healthcare in this country. Its your lifestyle diseases that will bankrupt the healthcare system. You may or may not die young, but the last 20-30+ years of your life will suck and you have no one to blame but yourself. And Before you turn it around on me, I'll just answer that I eat 1700-1900 calories per day of clean food, lean organic protein, unprocessed grain and fruits and veges. I exercise 90 minutes per day six days a week. I haven't walked into a fast food place or had a soda in years. I didn't always live like this, and if I can do it, anyone can. I plan on NOT being a slave to the pharmaceutical pill pushers. Dialysis? CPAP machine? No F'ing way.
