Rod purchase question

Hello,

I am close to making a purchase for my fishing addiction or maybe I am not. I have amazon credit and would like to have a nice Fall Striped Bass Surf fishing set up.

I am thinking of purchasing a Penn Battle 5000 or a Shimano Baitrunner OC, although I really like Diawa's.

I have done research here and I appreciate all the knowledge and offering of rod choices and effort people have spent posting them.

I fish in NJ mostly from the sand, but know that Jettys are great for producing fish. I already own two "el cheapo" rods and have a Penn 103 Silver and Fierce 3000 and hate to say it a Quantum blue runner 6000. which I trust about as much as the heroin addict pan-handling down Columbus blvd. (a little humor).

I think I need a new set up and would appreciate any advice.

really depends on what your budget is. Nothing wrong with a battle on a penn prevail rod. Can be had for around $180. If you wanted something nicer look at the spinfisher v or quantum cabo. The St. Croix triumph is a nice rod as well for not too much $. Whatever you decide to buy make sure you do a search here on SOL and see what people are saying about it.

I should mention that my question is two fold regarding this post regarding a Fall Season, New Jersey Fishing combo.

1) I have 75$ in gift cards to spend and think I should purchase the rod before the reel. Also, I own two reels and only have el cheapo rods.

2) what rod would you go with. I would like to spend the gift money, but could purchase something better or more expensive if that would make fall fishing better for my chances.

Thanks again.

Jeff

At $75.00, if you look around there is the Okuma Cedros and Okuma Solaris. I own a Solaris, I bought it at a very reasonable price new, under your budget, it is 10 feet and rated at 3 to 8. It is heavy. The Tsunami Airwave is also an option, but it would be at the top of your budget, and with shipping, it may even be slightly over. In contrast to the Solaris, the Airwave is very light. I like it.

The Okuma longitude is an option, but, I would go with the Solaris or Cedros before the Longitude.I have seen the Longitude for as little as $32.00. You get what you pay for. However, you could fish with it this year, and next year use it as a backup or let your so fish it (guest rod).

When on Amazon, make sure you read all the reviews. When I was looking, there was some tool selling a 10' foot pike rod as a surf rod.

That is kind of a tough budget for a top quality rod, but if you look around you can find something decent.

The more expensive will not always better your chances.  I catch just as much fish on my lower end rods, Penn and Okuma as I do with my higher end ones, Legend and IMX and I love them all.  Yeah, I feel the differences between the two, the higher end are lighter and cast further with a lot less effort, but most times the fish are feeding 40-50 feet from shore and sometimes even in the breakers or the wash so whats the point of casting 100+ yards when not needed 3/4 of the time.  I've also had cheapo rods and walmart specials rust and falling apart after a seasons use.  Reels on the other hand are different, I've had cheapo reels that feel apart after a few nice bluefish.  Don't get me wrong either, I believe both the rod and reel are equally important.  With proper care and maintenance, both a lower end rod and reel should hold up pretty well over the years.  Just don't go all in thinking expensive will catch you more fish while draining your wallet.  Also be careful buying rods from amazon, I bought a rod from there once and it was shipped in just a cardboard box with not much protection, but I was lucky and the rod was not damaged.

I've had a Battle 6000 the last few years, its a great reel, gets the job done and I just paired it to a 11' Penn Battalion surf.  Very nice setup that casts very well, very happy with it and a combined cost, msrp, a little above $200.  Also broke it in Sunday night with a couple cocktail blues.

Thank you guys for the amazing amount of information. I really appreciate it.

I have been doing some research. I found the Penn Prevail and was wondering if anyone had a recommendation on whether to get a 9,10,11,12 and the m/mh/or h.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to rod action to choose for plugging. Would you go with a Medium/Med/Heavy/Heavy action in the Fall for the big girls and boys.

will size of rod and action affect what kind of lures I will do well with? For example, I have read that heavy action is good for live lining eels which makes sense to me. So if I am plugging do I stay away from Heavy action?

If anyone feels like replying that would be great!

I won a spinner, 10' Penn Prevail MH 1-5 ounce in the Penn Forum. Gave it to my son, but that would be fine for NJ beaches. I put a Penn 4400ss that I had on it for him, a battle 5000 with 20 or 30 lb braid would be fine on it and just go fishing. Throws metal and plugs fine for a low cost setup.
