Moving to North Carolina

So my wife and I purchased an old home in NC to restore and move to early next spring. I'll be leaving our beloved Chesapeake Bay and be learning some new styles of fishing I'm sure. The good news is it's only an hour more drive to AI/VA from where I drive from now, the bad news is, it's an hours more drive than from where I drive now lol. I've posted in the OBX/South core but no replies. I know some of you fish NC so I'm hoping for some info. I am 5 minutes from the Neuse River and 1 hour 15 minutes from Atlantic Beach NC. Anyone know when the runs are down there and what species? I'm guessing cobia and reds from the surf and some good sound fishing in the Pamlico?

LOL...I kind of had an idea of.  Looks like I will finally have to break down and buy myself a plugging set up.  I see a lot of trout and drum caught on top water type rigs on WFN.  I have always been an 8nb8 type guy.  I hope it's enough to keep my busy and bring some of my friends down to visit ;)

Well you can still toss bait, but you won't need 8  Unfortunately there are lots of bait stealers around the backwaters and sounds, which will cause you throw jigs with gulp more than you have been accustomed to. You can also float and drift baits to keep them off the bottom!

When the fishing get's slow you can hunt up some wild pig to put in the smoker :)

Bob really? They have feral hogs there? Around the coast or towards the mountains?

Yes, and around the Neuse river basin too! You in pig heaven Rookie Surf :D

Google "Burgeoning feral hogs pose problems" and you'll find a good article from 2011. I was passing through that area on the way to the Keys a couple years ago and met some guys who said you can hunt them anywhere practically and they are abundant. They were gassing up the truck with a boat in tow and there was a huge one in the back of the boat.

I live in NC and fish that area (around Atlantic) from time to time.

You might want to go a little further north, up around fort Macon. Way less touron traffic more fisherman friendly.

Also invest in a cast net (if you don't have one) around this time of year you'll see schools of finger mullet like nothing

you'll see up around OC.(I grew up in Delaware) And the fishies down here love them!!
