Seriously, what color are mullet?

Hi folks.

I am kind of embarrassed asking this and know I'm waving the goog flag but in my defense, I'm color blind. I also know that lure / plug color is over-rated and used to hook fisherman more than fish. That being said, I think most of us would admit that color can be important at times, especially when bait is thick and predators can afford to be selective, e.g., the fall mullet run.

Other than white being the default daytime color, I know that folks say that the go to color combo to fish the mullet run is blue over white. Lures that are designed to imitate mullet are some combo of silver / gray.

What color do mullet look in the surf?

Thanks!

JD

I net mullet often and this is my take on their color. I can not attest to their color from under water as I have never seen them from that angle, but from the surf line they range from solid white to shiny silver to solid gold depending on the water tint and the angle of the sun.. When they are resting in large schools on the bottom (usually at slack tide) they appear as one big black ball. Just my .02c, probably .01c in this economy.

I was in South Carolina last week and had a ton a mullet come through for a few days. They were larger, the guy netting them was usually catching ones about 12". The main color was similar to the small one pictured above but they had ark gray stripes the length of their body and were a little darker on the top and the head. So I would venture to say that they change color some as they get bigger.

They probably were not the finger mullet that we are talking about here. They are called (locally) corn cob mullet and we usually see them here in the Jersey area later in the season. Nice bass bait to live line.

If your fishing Jersey you will most likely encounter the albino mullet: 1803048

The village, which had stood for maybe 1,000 years, didn't know we were coming that day. If they had, they would have run. boB was at the eye of our rage. And through him, our Captain Ahab. He would set things right again. That day, we loved him.
