my first lever drag

Hey all. I'm excited to say I just got my first lever drag reel, a Release SG. I absolutely love it. Had it out once sharking and was super impressed. I am having trouble with backlashes though. As you might know, I believe this reel is not magged so I'm assuming all casting control is done with the thumb? I ask because I have a Daiwa millionaire st and I can really lean into it for great distance and if I try that with the SG in looking at a major backlash. Can anyone give me some pointers on how to control over run on this type of reel? I'd really appreciate it. Or is it just va matter of practice practice practice.. Which I also don't mind. It's spoiled up with 40 pound braid atm. Or maybe 50 I forget because I went sharking. Im using it on a 11 foot shimano tiralejo 3-7 ATM but looking for a moderately priced nice 8 and bait rod to use this reel on also if anyone has b suggestions for that as well. Thanks again

You would be better off getting something with brakes or an adjustable magnet. I don't have a Release but hear its pretty fast out of the box. You could try static magging it to slow down the spool and save your thumb some nasty burns. Or just take it back and get an Avet MC which comes with an adjustable magnet. MXL MC is a good choice for sharks in the surf.

The way you move the rod through the casting stroke will determine whether you backlash or not. A smooth even power without a whip at the end of the stroke works best. Even if you use a slow oil.

If being stupid got us into this mess, how come being stupid can't get us out?
I don't want to behave improperly, so I just won't behave at all.

I was thinking maybe an oil that would actually slow it a bit but I might just be thinking crazy. Just not sure if there is something out there that might work

No your not crazy , try some heavy gear oil in the bearings , you can practice all you want but some reels just need a little braking and heavier oil is ideal.

Static magging works well if you have the time and patience to play with different magnets. I static magged a Penn Squall 40 lever drag with an old hard drive magnet. It is overmagged but will still cast over 120 yards with a less than optimal setup. As always, casting technique is important to get the best distance.

Honestly just heavy gear oil from Walmart , any of the heavy gear oils in 70,80,90w range makes effective bearing braking . Some of the longest tournament casts over my career were done with no name heavy oil . Rocket makes some heavy oils like XS and liquid grease but hard to find sometimes.

I'm considering buying a SG and I have been doing some research. On another forum someone mentioned that they prevent backlash when casting by moving the drag lever up a click or two - just enough drag to tame the overrun. I expect you will still need the thumb at the end of the cast. Try it and let us know how if it works.
