10wt bite tippet turn over question?

With blues coming in I need to change my tippet strategy. On my 8 and 10 wt my standard tipped is a straight 20# tippet material 6ft long with a Spro micro snap swivel at the end. For blues I am adding a 6" long 40# nylon coated steel (surf strand) with the same swivel and am having a hard time turning over or straightening out the 20# tippet, especially with larger flies. What do you guys use when throwing bite tippets and larger flies? What # and also what length.

When using a stiffer tippet do you usually shorten or lengthen tippet?

Ps sorry if this has been covered, I was able to find recipes for larger fly tippets but nothing for dealing with the troubles of a bite tippet.

Thanks in advance

JD

Im curious now if a larger articulated shank would be better, the 55mm ones or larger?. Probably wouldnt hold up at all durring a blitz or lend itself well to poppers like im trying to throw but for large deciever it may be the ticket.

I pre tie a few wire bite guards out of single strand 100lb leader wire, keep em in your bag in an old cigar tube, they turn over without being noticed. No snaps or swivels, loop to loop the pre tied end to your leader and add the fly with a quick haywire twist. Or some flies tied on long shank hooks usually works without the hassles of wire...

I would get rid of the spro swivel and buy some of that Tyger stuff...this is what I use - 6 feet of 30 - 40lb mono, basically whatever you have handy and 6 to 8 inches of the Tyger (connect with a double uni knot)...if the leader isn't turning over - shorten it. Blues are not leader shy - frankly a 4 foot leader would fine...

In terms of flies - as long the fly has a hook in it you should be fine - always crimp the barb

I think the Tyger I use is 30LB - I'm sure you would be good either way...Don't over think it to much - get some of this Tyger leader, double uni it to whatever leader you happen to be using. If there were only bluefish around, I would use 30 mainly because that's what I have in my bag. It is not that important to have a specific leader formula, as it is to have sound casting and getting your fly in front of a fish - thats 99% of the battle. For bluefish, your leader formula is about as important as the color of your hat..

Like Cpalms said just get some Tyger in 30 lb test and your good to go. It was also said don't over think the Blues, they are just not around that much that most shore guts even target them.

The more important thing to do would be target Stripers and if Blue comes along and cuts you off, tie on another fly and continue to target Stripers, if there are a lot of Blues around then you can then do a loop to loop with a piece of Tyger because it is knot-able like tippet material. You only need a 6 inch piece.

Bass are not leader shy but fishing with a swivel and black wire and a fly and you will not catch any Blues mostly because they just are not around but more importantly you will not catch any Bass either even if they are around because they are very " wire shy " if it is used with a fly especially the black wire.. Don't handicap yourself.

I was fishing up there this spring and the blues were so bad I just used a 30" length of 40lb 7x7 for a tippet and it did'nt stop the bass from hitting, all decent sized fish upwards of 12lbs,not like they were dumb shorts or put off by the wire.

There's a big ole hunk of metal sticking out the ass end of your fly and you guys are worried(not necessarily you Dick,I'm speaking in general) about the wire being seen?Really?

Ive actually gotten into a few schools of blues latley on the boat. inopertune times to use a fly rod but hopeffuly next trip will be the ticket for the popper flies. Played a little with the 40 lb 7x7 and got a good mix with a 4ft 25 lb mono and a 6 inch bite leader. As long as I can shoot it out to where they are hitting I will get em.
