Seeing a lot in flowering bamboo

Bees are darker than I remember from years ago?

Mixed in were many small bumblebees 1st year ones and tons of various wasps hornets house flies flying ants other insects

The white bell flowers were covered with thousands of flying insects

Good signs

That is a good sign. Some of the farms in my area had to have bees brought in to make sure their crops got pollinated… that's not even the orchards where that's been standard practice for decades, but regular field crops like squashes, etc.

Glad to hear you've got 'em in your neighborhood :th:

I passed a large stand of flowering bamboo yesterday and we stopped in awe of the honey bee activity. I have not seen so many in one spot in a dozen years.

Bumblebees were in great numbers too...

There was a large predatory black/steel blue insect flying around looking like it was hunting. I could not get a good look at it but it was almost as large as a half dollar and it flew like a very large horsefly. It almost landed on me a few times but it was moving too fast for a good look.

White faced hornet, maybe? They love yellow jackets. :D

Steel Blue Cricket Hunter?  Very cool steel blue wasp, but not very large or reminiscent of horsefly though.  Could have been a Cicada Killer which are much larger, but not very fast or blue.  I guess neither of my guesses are than good :D

Wasn't either of those....

I'll go by again today with the camera.

I've been seeing a few of these lately. No idea what it is but wing tip to tip it is a little bigger than a quarter and it appears to be hunting other bugs when I see it

Wrong color.... the one I saw was black or steel blue.

I went back but it wasn't there yesterday.

Too warm for the walk today. I may try to catch a pic of it when the weather cools.

That is, if it is there when I go.
