Some of the farms in my area had to have bees brought in to make sure their crops got pollinated… that's not even the orchards where that's been standard practice for decades, but regular field crops like squashes, etc. Glad to hear you've got 'em in your neighborhood
J
I passed a large stand of flowering bamboo yesterday and we stopped in awe of the honey bee activity. I have not seen so many in one spot in a dozen years. Bumblebees were in great numbers too... There was a large predatory black/steel blue insect flying around looking like it was hunting. I could not get a good look at it but it was almost as large as a half dollar and it flew like a very large horsefly. It almost landed on me a few times but it was moving too fast for a good look. White faced hornet, maybe? They love yellow jackets. "…if catching fish is your only objective, you are either new to the game or too narrowly focused on measurable results.” - D. Steel Blue Cricket Hunter? Very cool steel blue wasp, but not very large or reminiscent of horsefly though. Could have been a Cicada Killer which are much larger, but not very fast or blue. I guess neither of my guesses are than good
J
Wasn't either of those.... I'll go by again today with the camera. I've been seeing a few of these lately. No idea what it is but wing tip to tip it is a little bigger than a quarter and it appears to be hunting other bugs when I see it
J
It looked to be the size of this thing but dark. Again, I did not get a look at it as it was so fast and erratic. I'm judging what I saw based on how it flew and its size. J
Wrong color.... the one I saw was black or steel blue. I went back but it wasn't there yesterday. Too warm for the walk today. I may try to catch a pic of it when the weather cools. That is, if it is there when I go.
