calfarmli
Here is an update on the comments period on saving striped bass .If you care about this ENDANGERED fish please attend this meeting and voice your civil opinion on the proposed amendment changes. There are Some changes for the 9/16 meeting. The meeting will still be at Wang Center but not in Room 201. It has been switched to the theater which will accommodate 239 persons. Also, the meeting has been lengthened to 3 hours, from 7:00 until 10:00 pm. Mike Waine from ASMFC will give the initial presentation followed by comment from the public, no longer than 3 minutes each. Parking, for a fee, is adequate at the Administration building parking garage. Our friends at DEC (and I use that term with much reservation) have sent out personal invitations to commercial fishermen and charter boat captains, but of course not to us. It is imperative that we in the recreational sector get to Wang Center very early in order to avoid being shut out. Please get this info out to all persons that you deem appropriate. Ralph Updates will be provided as necessary.

JettyGuy
Thanks for the update!!! There may be a lot of people from all sides showing up.....239 seats won't stretch very far. We'll see how many of us are willing to "put our money where our mouths are", on this issue. I believe we will have an excellent turnout. No more lip service---this is an opportunity to help the stripers rebound. Pay homage to the fish we love.

Years ago, we used to fill lecture halls, and stood in the aisles when the seats were gone. Haven't seen that sort of turnout since the mid-1998s, and I'm curious to see whether tonight we'll see anything like it again. It would be a very good thing to see a new generation pick up the torch. "I have always believed that outdoor writers who come out against fish and wildlife conservation are in the wrong business. To me, it makes as much sense golf writers coming out against grass.." -- Ted Williams
JettyGuy
Yes,I'd love to see some representation from the 20 -30 year old crowd ...what happens here will affect their generation's fishing as much as anyone else's. I'll be there with a few friends...hope we fill the house. Hope something positive gets accomplished. No pain..no gain.

JohnP
Well at least for this night it was like years ago. Most seats taken and standing room only. Hard to say how lopsided the view was toward 1@32, or something conservative like that, but that was the clear majority. Was interesting that some commercials even partty/charter guys acknowledged a big drop in numbers of fish - but those that spoke had a different view on the question of a reduction. The 1@32 guys did a good job of helping get people out. Round of applause

JettyGuy
A very strong meeting for advocates of 1 at 32". I knew a couple of the the flats boats captains....even those "for charter guys" were pushing the 1 at 32". Interesting to hear a flats boat guide say that he only made a total of 25 trips because April through June he couldn't find enough fish in the bays or elsewhere, to warrant taking people out! That coming from a guy who makes a living putting people into fish. I was proud of a lot of recreational fishermen. The flag was truly represented and quite a few anglers spoke very eloquently. The pressure was put on the ASMFC to take action quickly and not stretch the cuts in" takes" to three years. I feel that it wasn't all lip service and that something good that benefits the stripers will come out of this meeting. Sadly there were very few young people at this meeting. But thanks to the few who did come and especially to the one young fellow who spoke. Overall, a fairly good turnout. Nice to hear fellow SOLers ROB(AUDIO Vox) and Larry Carlucci and Charles Witek speak so passionately. Great to see Willy Young give it his all. Nice to see Tom Farrell chat it up. Thank you to everyone who made the effort!!!! I didn't speak, but I sure learned a lot from the guys who were much more well versed on the fishery than me. A very positive meeting. And to Craig Caltalmo of Van Staal..thanks so much for your great speeches on behalf of anglers and the stripers.....I guess I'll have to keep buying VSs. calfarmli
Fair turn out ???? Over 2300 views on different websites that the meeting was today.I would say 200 to 250 fisherman. If saving the resource was sooooo important their should have been many ,many , more. But it's the same old story talk for some people is more important than acting .I have to say the crowd was respectful to each other which was good. What made it all worth while was the very last comment by I believe his name was Representative Boyle one of the commisioners on the panel Quote" I hear that POACHING stripers is a REAL PROBLEM I'm definitely going to look into that and see what can be done". Let's hope.Good meeting for those that were there.
Iannotti
Most comments were on point except for a few E. Hampton guys...Listening to them made me wonder what planet they were living on... I'm not even sure that one guy believed his own words..LOL
lisurfer49
Oh jesus i sat next to those guys without knowing who they were. They were getting visibly frustrated that things werent going their way. Waving their hands signaling 3min for rec guys but not comm guys.

So yes, a fair turnout. I'd like to have seen 500 guys too...but that's not realistic. Just the same, hard not to be inspired by the enthusiasm of those who attended.
