bigredgolf
Hi guys, I know this has been discussed on the board, but it doesn't seem to have been done recently. I am flying this weekend and want to bring: 5-weight rod in softer case reel w/ line SW flies stripping basket (If you're wondering, I'll be on the West Coast just chasing little surf perch and such in the suds from shore.) As per TSA, looks like I can carry most of this stuff on with me. Was thinking about just strapping my stripping basket to my backpack, which I travel with. What do you guys usually do when you have to travel with select SW gear? Thanks! Every day above ground and on the water is a great one
stormy monday
I carry it all on in a soft travel pack (assume a 4 pc rod). I switch to a floating line and forgo the stripping basket usually, Rite Aid drug stores have baskets than can be adapted with a bungee for under $6 :-)
lisurfer49
Ive had mostly no problems other then flies. Check those or risk getting them confiscated at security. Basket works fine strapped to pack i do that. I carry rod in tube and reel in back pack.

Black Clouser
For the last ten years I have used this carry on set up for carrying everything including striping basket, waders, boots, rods and reels. Works great and never had an issue with the airlines.

Righty
William Joseph basket goes with me when fishing is not the main priority. It's not ideal under any circumstances, but beats line in the water and schlepping an Orvis basket on the plane.

Black Clouser
Hey Guys, The bag pictured is a Simms Dry creek Roll top Bag size Medium. This bag is 100% waterproof and stores easily in the overhead bin. Flies, tippet, hemostats and pliers all go inside the Orvis striping basket in the bag . I did have my pliers looked at once by security a few years ago in Logan....but they let them go thru:). On a side note we had a nice North Easter go thru here the last few days and I just got in this morning from fishing the flood tides in the grass. I Love this stuff.....what a hoot BC
rplace
I try and avoid traveling with anything that screams expensive fly fishing gear inside. Usually I pack everything in a beat to hell duffle bag that looks like it is stuffed with dirty clothes. An old hockey duffle is big enough to hold 4 rods and reels, stripping basket, wading shoes, several fly boxes, chest pack, and the rest of the miscellaneous stuff for a trip. formula1
I just traveled to San Diego and carried on 6 fly rods (a 10 wt, two 12 wts, two 14 wts and a 17 wt) plus about half a dozen reels in my carry on bag complete with backing and fly lines. No issues, not even a raised eyebrow this time (usually all my fishing gear plus photography equipment plus laptops and iPads gets me the explosive swab treatment as well as scattering all my gear over a table then stuffing it all back in there helter skelter...). Mike Oliver
All these threads highlight is that there are huge inconsistences when it comes to transporting fishing tackle on commercial aeroplane flight. You can assume nothing even if you have enquired in advance as it can change at the check in desk. If it does and you have not planned for this you are in a pretty bad situation with a bag that may not be tough enough to go into the hold. Its even worse if you get past check in and security say no. This can mean you miss your flight by the time you have been processed twice. you have to go back to check in desk. Safest assumption is that you will not be allowed to take rods onto the aircraft. Even reels can be challenged. I have been refused reels in my carry on bag once. It can get expensive to as having to check in your carry on bag will incur with most airlines a nice fat extra bag fee. For us lot over hear typically that is between $60 and $90 each way. It is what it is. Question is " do you feel lucky today " LOL Mike
Fly Time
I have flown SouthWest Air to Fla. many times. Never had a problem with carry on, rods (4pc.), reels, flies. I will usually get a longer look at security but never an issue. International may be quite different. All is packed in a tackle bag by Clear Creek, purchased through Feathercraft.
