Today was my first day on on what will be my new schedule for the next two months. Without going into a lot of detail I have some personal business that will tie up my mornings which means I will be doing late day and evening outings until October.

Today I arrived in Sandwich after my morning duty around 2 pm just after high tide. When I stepped out of the car the first thing I noticed was the flag blowing straight in, indicating an East wind. Not happy to see that since the forecast was supposed to be SW. The wind felt light and I decided to walk to the water to check it before gearing up. I was not in a rush since the tide just turned. The water looked basically flat and while observing the water I noticed the wind seemed to switch around a couple of times and after watching for 10 minutes I decide to give it a go,

This was what I had for water until after 4 pm. Nice and flat.

After 4 the wind went to NE and soon just swung around to a light SW wind, finally the forecast was right.

The major feeding period was supposed to be from 2:20 pm to 4:20 pm. I always look at these periods more as an incentive to build up my hopes. The one thing that has been more true to form lately has been the fish seem to be the most active around the mid tides. That would mean just after the major feeding period ends so what we have here is another incentive to keep fishing. The major feeding period was a bust.

The weather today was absolutely perfect, no humidity, warm and no wind. I call it chamber of commerce weather.

I spoke with my friend Rod last night and we talked about the season up to this point and one of the things I pointed out in talking was the weather over all this summer has been extremely good, no real hot spells and it just doesn't feel like it is July going into August, so with the weather being this nice we feel like the fishing should be like it is in the spring. The problem is the fish know it is July going into August, which means slow fishing.

The major feeding is now over and we approach the mid tide and again the mid tide time frame starts to produce.

The first fish was at 4:03 pm and the next one was at 4:09 pm.

The fish were not big but at least the next two hours were at least a steady period of fish, hits and dropped fish. This was not the biggest fish but one of the fish that was a little better size at around 22 inches.

I think in the end I landed around 10 fish and should have had at least two dozen. The water finally just was two low in the hole I was fishing and as I walked back to the car I watched for breaking fish but that was a bust but I did score some sea glass along the way. Off the water at 7 pm and did the Dunkin Donuts pit stop as usual.

On the ride home I was happy with the outing today because for July going into August it was a good day for a mid day trip.

Good stuff Dick! Question- I don't always get to fish the tides- sometimes I have to fish the early morning until about 11 to get home to be with the family- would you say to fish when you can not just around tides? Or does most of your productivity come only when you fish tides?

Rob, I fish when ever I can, the thing I have found is that some times the fishing will be lights out when you least expect it and that just sets the stage to go back the next day around the same time and in many cases that can hold up for a few days. Sometimes it is one and done, in other words there here today gone tomorrow.

I do give the tides a lot of credence and I am fortunate that I am retired and can hit a tide form the high to the drop, that is the one constant I try to key on no matter the time of day. I do the same thing in the middle of August. I remember one August I started on a high and when the tide was getting low I sat down to rest and fell asleep for a little bit and when I woke up, what did I see, A whole bunch of tails sticking up out of the water, Big tails and lots of them rooting out sand eels, it looked like a bunch of Redfish moved into the area, Did I have fun that day, Oh Yes I Did !

There are tides that are prime for a sunrise outing and we all look for what is considered to be a prime time to go but when I don't have those tides I never worry about the time of day at all, I just go, I just go slow. keep it casual and pace myself.

When I fish estuaries I always try to hit the last hour or two of the incoming when the tide starts to slow down and then I fish the slack and the turn for a couple of hours. When the currant moves to fast I just move to the beach. Time of day is the least of my concerns for these trips.

I am sure many notice but I bet there are some that don't and that is that all my fishing now is always done during the day time. I do not fish nights any more. I'm just to old to do that now. Back in the day I never used to leave the house before 10 or 11 pm to start fishing and then I would do an all niter and fish the entire next day without sleeping, 36 hours days were the norm. I miss those days.

Thanks Dick for your wisdom.  From your reports it looks like you are fishing the back bay's-  I have to find water like that here in NJ- I am sure the behavior of the bass are the same here as they are there- just need to find that kind of water.

I know we get Redfish here in NJ as well (they started coming back about 2 years ago) so I may get lucky with them too.
