saltydawg
I have read a lot of articles about inappropriate selfies, from funerals to bathrooms. But apparently this one went viral. Then the girl got a lot of hate tweeted back her way. What do you think? Are we just old ****s who don't understand the context of social media like the younger generation does? -
fishnmagician
I think a lot of kids are idiots who are overly self indulgent and lack empathy to understand how others will view their actions. Eggy 10-13 LAA 7-14 50-50 2-
saltydawg
I have never taken a selfie, but I don't discount people who do automatically because I honestly think social media has kids wired differently in the way that they interact with their world. And I think selfies are (somehow) a part of that. -
BT758
I'm glad there was no Facebook or Twitter when I was in high school. In 20 years, presidential campaigns will consist of candidates digging up all the stupid **** their opponent posted on social media as a teenager, and putting it in TV ads. Knight771
From what I've read and seen, most young people her age don't have a clue about the Holocaust or the Holodomor. Most don't even know who was fighting who in WW2. And this is even more so for young girls who are mostly apolitical and are not interested at all in history. She is representative of her generation. She will probably start to get more knowledgeable as she gets older and starts to read historical novels.

I was at Pearl Harbor shortly after 911, and I wanted to punch every *** I saw smiling for a photo next to a hunks of destruction. I doubt it, the only "historical" novels women read have women with boustiers on the cover, not many are set in the camps. Knight771
Was at the Tomb of the Unknown in DC. Supposed to be total silence. But people who come in talking and gabbing and laughing are invariably young, at least when I was there. They were silenced. I wouldn't go to hard on the girl. I don't think she has a clue about the death camps even if she has heard to them. She has not stopped to consider the depth of what really happened. And, as I said, she has no idea of the conflict or the participants or the who, what, why and where.

saltydawg
Well, give her this much credit: she actually went to Auschwitz, which shows more interest in history than most 18-year-olds show. And I think that selfies may (this is me playing sociologist) be the way young people see their lives now...glimpses of themselves in different times, places, and stages of their lives. It's like a digital flip book of their lives. -

Surf Hunter
she should have had a sad face not a smile but like salty said, this is how young folks catalog their lives so I really don't have a problem with it. Be the chimp, not the frog.....
