2014 July Freshwater Fishing Report

Same rules as always: Report as little or as much as you wish but no "spot burning" for private freshwater areas that have limited access. I do not think it is a problem posting a report naming lakes like Round Valley, Lake Hopatcong or any of the other large lakes that can accommodate large groups of fishermen. But, once again, giving specific locations in those lakes is considered spot burning. If there is something reported that you do not agree with or consider a spot burn, report the post. Do not further burn the spot by quoting a spot burn. The theme will be learning how to catch fish, not where to fish.

My name is Terry and I am a fisherman!

Tried last night for an hour before the storm. Smallish stream fed pond. Threw small metal lips and surface plugs hoping for a big bass. I know they are in there because there is a herring run through there and have seen pics of 5-6lbers from the place but i got nothing :(.

Something was going crazy eating bugs on top i think they must have been panfish but BIG ones.

"You can't fish here ! This is the swim area!"

Fished this morning 6:30-10:30. Excellent action for the first three hours when wind was light out of the north. When the wind shifted to NE and picked up in intensity as Arthur moved closer to NJ, the bites pretty much died out in the last hour. Lost count but I think I had about 20 or so LMBs up to 3 pounds. Plus two of the smallest pickerels I ever caught in a long time. One couldn't be more than 8" long. All on the chatterbait, of course. They were on the feedbag big-time with the approaching storm, hungry and aggressive, hitting the lure with jarring strikes. Dropped quite a few too.

I need to go back to Dick's today and get more of the popular June bug chatterbait. The last one I have is really beat up from bass hammering it constantly. Heck, its skirt is just about naked. I lost the other one to a huge bass last weekend. They are loving the chartreuse 4" Gulp! mullet as the trailer. :th:

WOW, your report almost mirrors mine ;)

I'm on long island & the only real difference is that i fished the tail end from about 3:30 pm - 8:30 pm.

I had yak out & mostly fished the deeper water that bordered a fairly distinct weed line at the drop, had rain most of the time with a few wind gusts that got my attention but it was doable. I fished the entire width of the drop off anchoring up on the flat & even doubled back to find them re-staging again later on in the trip. I had a north wind the entire time.

The only thing i threw was a 1/16th weighted 7" black power worm, never needed to change up, thats what they wanted :)

I also lost count but most bass were in the 2 - 3 lb range but i did find a 5 lber in the mix, had several pickerel to 22" as well.

i remember thinking "the feed bag is on & not another soul in sight" i'm sure the lack of traffic helped out a little ;)...........

Once the weather started to improve the bite slowed to a pick....

Sorry i'm not set up for pics on the yak, wish i could'a had a couple to post.

Best regards

Another banner night from 8:30 PM-1:30 AM. It actually started very slowly because of two firework shows going on at the same time at opposite ends of the lake. They were close enough I could see all the fireworks going off above the trees. But they naturally spooked the fish from biting for the first couple hours. But when they were over, it was game on! I lost count to 4 lbs. They were so aggressive that alot of times the bait was completely engulfed even though it was pitch black out. Most were in the 1-1.5 lb range with an occasional 2 or 3 lber and that one nice fish weighing in at 4 lbs (18.5 in). I was having so much fun I stayed an extra hour before heading in.

All on chatterbait tipped with 4" chartreuse Gulp! mullet.
