ontheline
I bought one of the new Shimano Ultegra 5500 XSB reels. Now I need a good rod to go along with it. I'm looking at the Shimano TRS106MA Tiralejo 10'6" rated 1-3.5oz and the Legend 10'6" rated 3/4-4. I have a number of St Croix rods, some are coming up on 20yrs old, and have never had issues with any of them. Shimano rods I have zero experience with but the Tiralejo's are built for the reel I bought and I have read some really positive observations of the system. I mainly fish open beach. I'll be casting anything from Bomber's to Super Strke Little Necks. I like the slightly lower lure rating of the Legend for the lighter plugs. I also prefer a rod I can feel load up on a cast. Something not real stiff. Anyway there is no "right" answer to this questions. If you have experience with any of the above and are willing to share I would love to hear your observations. I'm looking for a combination that I will enjoy using out on the beach and if I'm extra blessed will help me catch some fish. Thank you,
Surf Lizard
The new Tiralejos are just too new, not sure how much feedback you are going to get. The verdit for the Legend is out there, you really cant go wrong with the Legend 3/4 - 4 if you like throwing lighter plugs, not as efficient when u start getting into the 3 oz range. The rod is very light and a pleasure to cast.
NIGHT STRIKES
The Legend 10.6 3/4-4oz is a sweet rod as I bought one after surfcasting plugs on the 9'er for times that I need a little more distance or fishing in more moderate/rougher conditions . Liking the Less-is-More casting style these days and with the LC guides it is a pleasure to cast all night/day and I am also a fan of the handle grips these come with. Had a chance to test out these new Tiralejo's with Roy recently at a Shimano Event and I must say they did a very good job with the redesign on them plus they are available for a great price and if I wasn't so invested in the St.Croix's and other custom rods I have I would be taking a harder look at using one of them also.. Really don't think you can go wrong here with this decision.. Good Luck, SteveG

rthomas
I think the Shimano is a lot cheaper and is a very good rod. My son has the Tiralejo 10'6" 2-8 and loves it. It casts SP's great. Why me?

PCstriper
I had a 10'6" Shimano Tiralejo all set to go the other day at Bernies in Sheepshead Bay when one of the guys asked if I had my heart set on it, and after a few months of looking into it I pretty much did . He then went on to tell me about a couple that were returned and one was exchanged for another and that one was broken later on that day ! He said it is a very good rod but it does have some problems. I asked what they would recommend in the same price range and the suggested the Tsunami Airwave Elite 10'6", at almost $100 cheaper then the Shimano Tiralejo I figured I'd give it a try , already having used the previous model Airwave for at least 5 years and really liking the feel of the Elite . I'll let you know how it is after I try it out in a couple of weeks, if this snow ever leaves ! bac0701
Great thanks let me know. They look like nice rods. I felt up the Shimano the other day went to fisherman supply and felt it. Man it felt great a tad heavier then the legend but wow way nicer then the older. I'm that or a used legend. With the long cast reel I can't imagine how far tins will go on the right swing
SoJersey
Why only those 2 brands?
Espresso
There's about $140 difference in price but you'll have to ask yourself, is lifetime warranty important to you? If it is, I think you'll have to lean towards the St Croix as Shimano only offers a 1 year warranty on their newer Tiralejo. Even the St Croix Avid surf series offers a lifetime warranty. I don't care much for the grips on the Legend but the soft faux cork on the Avid's are pretty nice.
bac0701
Yeah that is very appealing I didn't know Shimano was only a year. My buddy loves his legend and he's had hundreds of fish in that thing. Had a similar century but sold it for bills
mumichog
In addition to the 1 year warranty, Shimano has just added two new aspects to their rod coverage: 30 Day Warranty - anything goes wrong with rod related to a "manufacturing nonconformity" within first 30 days Shimano replaces rod for free, including 2-day shipping both ways. Shimano Express - One time opportunity for an angler that breaks rod for any reason to replace rod at 50% off MSRP. Shimano ships new rod to you for free via 2 day service (after you pay 50% cost of new rod) and includes a tag for free return shipping of broken rod within 30 days. In both cases they say you will need original receipt, though I believe they will accept cell phone pic of receipt. This is on Convergence rods on up only - that is the bulk of their lines anyway. http://fish.shimano.com/content/sac-fish/en/home/customer-service/shimano-rod-services.html
Paka
St Croix says 10'6" Legend weighs 11.6 oz. Shimano Tiralejo 10'6" weighs 10.6 oz. Wonder how much lighter rods can get.

Looks like shimano realizes they are gonna need to revamp the policy with the upcoming Zodias rods that are going to sell like mad! twilson615
I have to second the notion that the lifetime warranty should be a big factor in any decision. If your going to be using the rod a lot then the Legend is the way to go. I had the Mojo and I absolutely loved it and the few times I used a buddies Legend it would cast an SP minnow a mile... I think St Croix should be the starting point for anyone who fishes a lot, the cheaper rods wont hold up over time.
