Island Beach State Park law enforcement

First kudos to the new park manager he is doing a super job maintaining the park and it's programs. That being said the enforcement of the park rules is nonexistent

I entered at Gillikins tonight this is a fishing only area and no fires in this area. There is absolutely no camping in the park anywhere on the beach. Annual permit holders may sleep in the bathing area parking lot but not on the beach. Driving south I saw at least 3 fires and a campground( tent and couple trucks with a tent like thing on the back of each) with a fire going in the middle of the camp. I heard the gate was called and a park police responded. He drove past the camp and stopped by one of the fires. I don't know if a citation was written or not but the fire was extinguished. He then drove past the impoundment again without stopping. Think he may have known the campers ;) Maybe he just missed seeing the tent and fire. On my way out there were several new fires blazing. People driving through the bathing area after stopping by the NO VEHICLES sign I guess I should know better than to go there on a weekend.

Guess I just needed to vent. The park is a real cash cow and there should be enough $$ to pay for some park rangers to enforce the rules. The place never gets better, it's a zoo

I was also at Gillikens last night. I spoke with the people, they were not issued a ticket but just given a warning. The park enforcement officer first drove north from the bathing beaches. He passed right by the three tents with the fire in the center of them. He then gave the warning ticket to the people next to me. He then proceeded to drive to the Gilliken's entrance right past the two other campfires. He then turned around and drove south again past the other campfires and the three tents with the campfire in the middle. He disappeared towards the bathing beaches. I guess the reason he didn't get out of his vehicle was because of all the sand he might encounter. The enforcement officers did a good job stopping everyone at there officers house yesterday checking cars for seat belts. Plenty of macadam and gravel there.

Why do you guys care about people sleeping on the beach or the campfire? How does that impact your fishing? driving?

Usually they are camped right in the best holes. and a lot of them are slobs. Little history of the Gillikins access. It use to be completely closed to vehicles during the summer season. Several groups got it open as a for fishing only area. Sign entering says must be actively fishing another sign says no fires. People burn anything they can find including creosote covered wood. I've had to move from where I was due to having creosote in my eyes and lungs. In over half of the park it is legal to have a fire. Go there if you want to burn something.

The park patrol use to be park rangers who were constantly on the beach 24/7 enforcing rules. They are now state park police and are seldom seen except for speed traps. They are not on duty throught the night when they are probably most needed. They report to the state police not the park manager. People know this and do anything they please.

I blame Obama.

+1 I have seen alot of stuff that would NEVER fly back when the park rangers where around. During the holiday weekend there was a group of RV's parked like a freaking wagon wagon circle and they did not move from sat-mon. Not a fishing rod to be seen in their "camp" . Back in the days rangers would have made them park in the lots at night if they werent fishing. The amount of garbage and half burned firewood laying around is sickening. Sooner of later some fool is gonna fall asleep with his RV parked too close during a moon tide.

Obama again? I thought he was very generous giving funds for the recovery of the area. At least according to Christie...

I care because I follow the rules!!!

I'd love to set up shop with a fire and a tent too but don't because its against the rules, so why shouldn't I be upset about others doing it?

This problem started ~10 years ago and it's been getting worse ever since. In the past the rules were enforced strictly and fairly. If you were on the beach between 12a-4a you had better been fishing. Sleepers were ticketed and thrown out. They checked too. Many times we would see the ranger sitting by the jetty around 3a waiting for people to come off early. Gillikins was strict fishing only, as it should be. A good friend caught grief once because he came with his wife, she set up a chair and he started to walk and fish. Ranger came by and saw no one fishing and caused some mild grief. Now, you can camp there for three days and no one cares.

To answer the post about why does it matter - it keeps the riff raff out. The place has turned into a BBQ, camping, drinking hell hole. The place is a constant mess - holes, fire remains, trash, people all over the dunes, etc. Theft was never an issue but has certainly increased. I would say that sooner or later we would lose access to the park but I don't think the current superintendent gives a damn.

As somewhat an aside, for all the whiners about the ibsp flukes regs, they can't even enforce the current park rules and you're worried about the fluke stuff?

My third year without the pass and I dont really miss it. I mean I miss the old IBSP, but I dont miss what goes on there these days.

I saw a picture here or on fb and had a guy holding a bass on IBSP with a big ass honking tent behind him. ***? Screw it, if they dont care why should we?

Maybe I will start launching my yak from there. Been wanting to do that for years. Have a nice fire at Gillys, pass out drunk in my Kelty tent to the drone of my generator, wake up piss on the dunes and launch my kayak. Take a nice nap and then maybe get the ATV and rip up some dunes by the Judges Shack. :th:

And I care because I follow the rules also.

As Lou said, it is also a pain in the ass to have some of these schmucks parked half way back from the lip of the beach to the dunes, camped out with half a dozen spiked rods at the water. Then if you try to drive close to their vehicles, they have a cow. They need to be instructed on beach etiquette. I know that is a non-word on IBSP but if they don't wise up someone is going to wind up in a brawl out there. :bonk:

We need some one like Dirty Ernie again, put the jetty gaff straight up in the cooler rack and drive the low beach at low tide. Just keep driving and never stop. The good 'ol days.

The yak rule is one strictly enforced. Last time I drove in with the yak I was promptly told that I couldn't launch from the beach. Explained that I was Launching bayside at 21. I was told that despite having a 195 dollar sport fishing permit I had to pay the 5 dollar entrance fee or risk being ticketed.
