Avet 2 speed vs. 1 speed, and MC?

Hey All,

I started fishing about 2 years ago after college, and after a few trips out on charter boats I got myself a Penn TRQ200. It's a bit overkill for fluking/ seabass, kind of want to get a lighter reel, bit still with a bit of power? Any suggestions from seasoned fishermen?

I've been looking at the Avet reels and they seem to be a popular choice. Not too sure about how important the 2 speed vs. 1 speed difference in, hoping someone can weigh in on its uses (i'm used to the star drag reels). Also if someone could help explain what the MC on some reels means, that would be great! :)

You don't need a 2 speed Avet for fishing fluke or stripers really, an SX or MX is good matched to a 6'6 trevala rod and your good to go. The magic cast is good if you plan on casting from the beach but since these reels are very take its not needed especially if your using it on a boat or yak.

You can use any reel for fluke. If you go Avet, I like the 2 speed for 2 reasons, the main gear is stainless and the 6:1 retrieve is 36" per crank. The thing with fluke is, IMO, you want a solid rod thats light, but has backbone on the hookup but will bend with the headshakes of a big fish. To stiff you miss fish and they shake the hook, too soft same problem. Any light reel matched to a rod will work. In the bay a baitcaster is better. In the ocean, an Avet works. The MC is useless if you are boat fishing.

I have a couple Avets and have only used the two speed reels for deepwater (cod/pollack) or tuna. I prefer the single speed SX 5.3 for fluke, seabass and porgy.

With regards to the MC versions, I have only found them useful on a boat when we come across stripers and I need to cast OR when my fiance fishes with me because it helps tolerate bird's nests when she inevitably drops the line down with thumbing the reel.

I've been using my penn trq200 on a mh rod and I normally fish blackfish seabass and fluke. Seems okay, I was just trying to go for a lighter setup. Should I switch to a medium action rod? I was also looking into the avets so I could do more fishing in a bay or by the shore so I want to be able to cast it with a lighter setup.

Other reels for fluke and bass conventional could be a penn jigmaster, squall, or an Abu Garcia 6500(I have one on the BST for sale)

Yea I've been looking into other reels, but I've heard horror stories (and seen a few) where the new penns that are made in China just break apart/crack especially when used around saltwater. I'm trying to find a lighter reel compared to the penn torque i use which is 27 oz. Trying to keep my budget under 200, but I've been trying to bid on the new lighter TRq25 and trq15s for around 250 :)

How are the abu garcia reels? I've never really seen or used them. I've played around with a couple of shimanos and daiwas and I always preferred penn, but I'm trying to branch out.

I have the two speed MC....I mainly fish it in low gear for fluke cause you don't pump them(nice and steady). I jig striper/blue/Albies in high gear...I don't know why people say it's useless to have a reel that can cast well on a boat!? I cast all day when jigging (party boats)

If you get a 2 speed reel that can cast it will serve almost any of your inshore needs(not a one trick pony)

Very happy Avet user here.  The MC (magnetic cast control) works very well.  If you are going to do any long distance casting of bait or lures, I highly recommend this option.  I own several casting reels from various mfg., all with magnets, and the Avet is my favorite.  Very well built, and the size is nice.  CharkBait is a good source.  Mine is a single speed.  A friend has a 2-speed, and has had good luck with it.  A little faster retrieve in high speed mode, which is nice- especially for lures.  He uses it in that mode almost all the time.  Low speed is a nice option if you need power.  Downside to a 2-speed is added expense (and perhaps reliability/maintenance?)- although that hasn't been an issue for my friends 2-speed.  Avets are a great value.

Thanks for the comments! I think I'll try getting the MC, just in case I ever change things up and really need it for casting. Good thing about these nicer reels is with good maintenance they can last a lifetime.

Any suggestions on size? I was originally looking at the MX series, but it seems everyone is saying the SX are good enough and its just a spooling size difference.

The problem with the avets is that they are lever drags. Star drags are inherently better casters becasue of their design. Avets also cast like crap from factory, even with the MC because of the factory greased bearings. My brother had gotten a avet MC last year for what you are describing. Casted like a dog turd. He replaced all bearings with boca's. Will still be used though, but he wanted something lighter. . I ended up getting him a lexa 300 for christmas. Alot lighter, great caster, 20+ pounds of drag, levelwind, power handle., under 150$. What more is there to need. The penn fathom 12 is a nice reel for fluke and sea bass. Thinner spool and easier to put the line back on the spool. Which you will do all day long. I would look really hard at the lexa 300. They are a favored reel of alot of people, including fluke and sea bass specialty captains.

If you are going to continue to charter boating for trolling and bottom fishing, then you can pretty much disregard the casting comments.

I have been using Avets for years for big game fish in Mexico. Up to and including the 80W for big Yellowfin Tuna.

For the price IMO a better reel would be hard to find.

As for two speed  Vs single speed. The high gear is a shoulder saver when bringing up rigs from deep water for a bait check on a missed bite, and the low gear is great for inching in big fish.

That's the first I've heard about avets being an issue. I'll look into the lexa and fathom reels, thanks :)
