Capt Buck
House is in South Jersey with Atlantic City Electric service. All lights are those CFL jobs stove is LPG, dryer in electric, heat is oil and winter time bills are still almost $500/ month. Is this normal now? How much do most people pay on an average? I know it would vary according to the house but just some numbers to compare.
MikeMc
Seems like an awful lot to me. I don't pay near that much in the summer with my air running, Think the highest my bill has ever been is around 2 bills. Of course, my house isn't very big, either. You know it must be a penguin bound down if you hear that terrible screaming and there ain't no other birds around.

Capt Buck
200 + year old two story farm house about 2500 sq.ft. of living area. I do everything i can to keep usage down to a minimum and it seems the bill keeps going up and up. I don't want to think what it will be with AC on in the summer. Maybe I won't run it this year. Check the prices per kilowatt with different suppliers. You know it must be a penguin bound down if you hear that terrible screaming and there ain't no other birds around. JMB
That 500 in the winter seems awful high. Have them come out and check things out If you use eclairs in your example, he will get it right away. MikeMc
mybeach
Adjustable rate jump? Suppliers around the country are banging the consumers with huge jumps in the price per kilowatt hour. Check your rate like Mike says. Compare to last bill. Providers may not be the company you think it is.
DerrickT
The boro I live in buys its electric out of state and sells it to the borough customers. Sewer, water, trash and electric normally runs $200 to $250. Everything in the house is electric. January, February and March this year ran $350-$370 because of it being colder. Some township customers who have PP&L have had as much as 50% increases in their bill because of the whole expiring contract and variable rate increase BS. You just described my house. 500-600 gallons of oil a year, 800-1000 kwh month, and a couple hundred gallons of propane for hot water and cooking....runs around what you pay. Dehumidifiers and electric space heaters are probably the biggest individual hogs but when you need them you need them especially in an old house. Up here, if you go with a third party supplier for electricity it may knock 10% off of the generation charge but the "fixed" line charge is more than half of the bill so it nets out to less than 5% savings. Only time I've ever had bills that high was when the hot tub motor froze up and it got to $400. Something is definitely wrong. Try shutting stuff down circuit by circuit with a meter on the line and see where it's all going. Something definitely ain't right.
