Tool Review: Ridgid Drill and Driver combo

I bought this combo kit at Home Depot for $200 and it's fantastic.

This is what you get:

Drill (with detachable handle)

Impact Driver

Two 18v batteries

Charger

Carrying Case

Free Radio

Well, if you do the the math, each battery costs about 70 bucks. You get two of them so you're getting the rest of it for 60 bucks. I've used this thing for a few months and I absolutely love it. There aren't many negative things I can say about it so I'll just start with that.

  1. The radio is worthless to me. It works well but most job sites have some source of power you can tap into if you want music. If there's a site with no power, I'm certainly not going to waste one of my precious batteries on a radio.
  2. The impact driver is VERY strong. You wear through nibs quickly. I could swear I had a bunch of the Makita gold tips laying around but I can't find them. I think someone walked off with them. :squid:
  3. Both the drill and the driver have an LED light on it to lightly illuminate your work. It's very useful when you need it. I find it very annoying when you don't. I would love an option to turn it off when I don't want it. Even thought it's just an LED, I find myself taking the battery out so I don't accidentally drain the battery by leaving the light button depressed. The light comes on if you use the drill/driver and there is a separate light button.
  4. The clips for hanging your tools from your belt aren't very good. They are pretty thin in my opinion. I left them off.
  5. The carrying bag leaves a bit to be desired. It's a bit like a soft cooler. Everything fits in there without a problem but I would rather have a hard case foam cutouts or even molded plastic. I'm not a wimp on my tools but I don't throw them around either.

Those are all negatives I can live with. I believe everything is covered under Ridgid's lifetime warranty except the radio. I think that only has a 3 year warranty. A three year warranty on something that was "free". Not bad.

I love everything else about this combo kit. It does everything you want it to do. I've drilled holes, driven a ton of screws and even some good sized lag bolts. I've assembled quite a bit of stuff with it. I use it a lot.

This is going to sound very silly but one of my favorite things about this are the batteries. They charge quickly and last a long time. They also have a button on the front that shows you how much charge is left. Very handy. Another great feature of these batteries they don't have a stem on them like just about every other drill I've owned. These batteries sit in the top hatch of my tool case and leave a very little footprint. The stemmed batteries need to be put on their side and even the best case scenario, take up 3-4 times the space.

The grips on both the drills are rubberized and comfortable. When you add the battery, it really balances out the tool.

I don't really use the handle at all. Maybe if it had a hammer function or I was drilling metal or cement, I would. The drill has an adjustable clutch which is handy if you don't have a dedicated sheetrock gun.

That's about it. I bought my old man the Dewalt combo kit but I prefer the Ridgid. Maybe because it's mine and I use my tools a lot more than I use his.

That setup is junk, buyer beware.

The village, which had stood for maybe 1,000 years, didn't know we were coming that day. If they had, they would have run. boB was at the eye of our rage. And through him, our Captain Ahab. He would set things right again. That day, we loved him.

I think he's waiting for the apology due him. Don't hold your breath Patrick. They can get caught red handed making up scummy lies about you, but their demented egos won't ever let them own up their their scummy ways.

Thanks for the write up.

My Ridgid baby sawzall died young. I brought it back to HD for an exchange. After 30 days, you have to go through the manufacturer(Home Depot) in Kansas or something. The case fits my oscillating tool well. The sawzall went out with the trash.

You'll be able to get parts easy on the internet, but why buy from a company that put your local hardware store and half of the real lumber yards out of business?.

You think too much. I don't want an apology for something I have no clue about, I'm just busting stones. Now to get back to my scummy ways to give ya more to talk about. :th:

Are you saying Ridgid is owned by Home Depot? Because it's not. Ridgid is owned by Emerson, not Home Depot. It looks like Ridgid has some sort of deal with Home Depot though but it is not a house brand.

I buy from Home Depot because they're really the only store left with any selection. Other than Harbor Freight, I only know of two hardware stores in my town. One doesn't have a very big selection and the other one I refuse to go to because every time I've been in there, they have been rude. I asked them where a product was and he just lazily pointed down an aisle. Very helpful! I also saw one of their employees pretty much flat out laugh at a woman because she didn't know how to do something. The store doesn't deserve my support.

it wasn't directed to you. Patrick is settling a score with these write ups, IMO.
