FishermanMikexD
9.9/10 Abu Garcia 6500 new model non mag with 30lb fireline Or a newell s229-5 reel Which reel would be better for boat jigging blues bass, maybe bottom fishing porgy seabass
Ironman580
Mike I would go with the newell but its all personal preference, but i'm old school abu makes a nice reel too but as far as tough, long lasting reels . A newell is pretty hard to beat . with little care and a washdown after each use it'll outlast an abu , also with a nice light rod a newell is super light can jig all day , Joe Also if getting a newell is hard try to get a penn sguidder 146 also a light reel and for the money a viable option they can also be upgraded with a newell kit well worth the money but that just my opinion Sorry Charlie

In some places, being able to jig the bottom and not get snagged requires more speed than a stock Squidder has... thus the -F or -5 Newells have the advantage for me. As a surf reel the retrieve rate is better too except when bait slinging. I would use Abus (and do) more often for plugging because their gears just might not hold up... actually probably won't. Ironman580
I agree with you 1dozen but off a boat jigging not as much a factor Sorry Charlie
1dozenraw
I agree with you 1dozen but off a boat jigging not as much a factor That probably makes perfect sense... I just don't get out in a boat much. "We eat cold eels and think distant thoughts" Jack Johnson.

Queensfisher
Newell all the have a few for years easy to take apart no springs or anything else to get lost. Strong enough to bait, jig, boat or surf fish I think they are great reels. Have some abu's also just dont think they are as strong.
levari
Technically speaking Newell is definitely a better choice.. However you will need to consider that parts are hard to find since Newell went down the tubes..
Awesome John
On a boat straight up and down with no long distance casting involved ı would go with the Newell.. Now havibg said that has anyone here ever seen the great Ron Arra cast on a Newell? I have heard he actually casts across the cape cod canal! The Horizon Calls.......... Finprof
I have 2 ABU 6500s that I use for jigging striped bass in Chesapeake Bay but never take them for bottom fishing for sea bass or porgies. For porgies and cod and sea bass and tog I have to decide between a Newell 220 and a Newell 229.
