jigging knob question

Recommended Posts

I have a Saragosa 3000 f and a friend Gave me a jigging knob to try out and said you had to drill the original out and just screw the new one in. The problem is that the part of the knob that fits on the inside of the handle is too big now. So do I just drill more to fit that piece? Will this make my handle prone to cracking where I drilled out the hole? I think it'll be to hard to find a replacement handle so hopefully I didn't make my reel useless.

You roll the dice and take your chances on this one. Shimano likely engineered their dimensions for max reliability but I have heard of numerous guys doing this and not running into trouble, yet...

There are other aftermarket knobs that should not require and enlargement. The safest would be to go that route.

The guys from Jigging World do this all the time and post regularly on 360 Tuna dotcom and may be able to help you further.

It saves me 20 dollars for the jigging knob at least. Im going to go ahead and enlarge the hole with some sort of lubrication to lessen the risk of cracking. And the fishing I'm going after is not going to put too much strain on the handle. I just wanted to pimp my reel a little ^_^

Yes I noticed that it does move about 1000ths of an inch which can be annoying if it makes a clicking sound when reeling. Open the knob, split it in 2 pieces and fill the inside neck with CorrosionX. Use your finger to put pressure on the oil and it will push thru and come out the end close to the handle. This will stop that click. For how long I don't know..

Add a little grease to the threads where the knob screws together so it won't bond itself together with salt corrosion.

I have to ask are you splitting the knob and using a flat tip on the inside and a phillip on the stem end ?

Yeah its pretty tight. I'll ask my friend who I got it from BC I know he bought them in bulk and see what he says.

And handi2 - that stops the click because of the grease providing a cushion right?

There are washers (shims) that come with the knob/shaft kit. Add or subtract until you get it the way it should be. There should be almost no play. Certainly not enough to click. The first one I did had the same result until I re-did it. I've done several now and they're good.

When you drilled the handle shank did you go all the way thru ?Ive had it where the pin that the screw goes into didn't seat all the way into the handle shank and you would have the play at the knob.

Here's the reel with the knob and the play mentioned. Its not a side to side play but a sliding play. And the shaft was drilled until it popped off and I had to enlarge the hole to accept The new knob.

That's way too much play. The newer knobs do have a slotted tip screw now and the 36mm small knobs are left hand thread. If you zoom the pics I posted those knobs also have the slotted screw.

I would send it back with the picture attached.

As Mitchell Master asked did you unscrew the knob into 2 pieces and use 2 screwdrivers to attach the knob? If so again that knob has too much of a gap.
