IanBlythe
Hi all, Currently looking at a boat with a 2000 yamaha 250 ox66. Does anyone have any experience or know anything about these engines and how they run? Any information is appreciated. Thanks!
Tall Paul
I had a 1999 Yamaha ox 66 250hp on my 23 Regulater. It was a good strong engine, good on fuel, didn't have any issues with it. I would say it was one of the best engines in it's day. A friend, who runs charters, had one on a 23 Parker, put over 4500 hrs on it before it died. He repowered with the new 4 stroke. w2f4
I had a 2000 250ox66 on 24' cobia walk around. Super reliable engine that performed surprising well on that size boat. Popped on plane with 17" pitch big dia prop, topped off 40mph. Designed to drop a couple of cylinders during low rpm, but you never feel the transition. Given quality oil and decarb should give very long service life. EZ Routine Impellers and t-stats is all I did during the 6 years I had it. Sold the cobia to get my current center console, which has a 200ox66' If in the market to buy today, would buy an ox66 again. For engine your looking at - Post lots of pics of the engine and power head and underside of mounting bracket tilt assembly for members to comment on. Would be good idea to get compression checked. Lower unit, report gear oil condition, if suspect then pressure check.

saltydawg
These motors are in high demand around here because they run forever and are cheap and easy (relatively speaking) to fix. -

logeypogey
I had 2 of them on my Grady. 1999 250 ox66. Great engines solid all around due the basic maintonance they will be problem free. A little thirsty on fuel and oil but you can buy alot of fuel and oil for the cost differance of a 4S. I burned 25 gph per moter @ 5200-5500. 12 gph per moter @ 4200 , 10 gpm per moter @ 3800, and 1.5 gpm at idle. Oil was around 1 gallon per 45-48 gallons of gas. If you purchase this let me know i have a box full of brand new yamaha factory maint parts

IanBlythe
Thanks to all for the input. Thus far everything I have heard has been positive, barring the gas/oil which is manageable. @logeypogey thank you and if I do go through with the purchase I will make sure contact you.
