RichLou
First I want to say thank you to everyone who responds to all us "tourists". We definitely bombard you guys with questions. That being said, here are some more My wife and I rented a house in Frisco, on the canal, bay side from July 26th to August 2nd. Im gonna soak some crab pots along the bulkhead in hopes of some fresh crab. Can I fish here at all? Any reddish or trout held in the canals? Should I be able to Castnet bait here and then fish the bay or are artificials the way to go? Its a family vacation but I will get some fishing in! Lol. Is it better to fish at night? I don't expect much from the beach but I'll soak some bait while I'm there (*member formerly known as 'rookie surf')
reel gambler
Yes you can fish there...there are puppies and trout in the creeks and canals. Bait in the canals is available, but at that time of year I wouldnt worry about it too much...metal, shrimp, and fleas should cover most bases. Nothing wrong with clamming the sound with some mesh bags and the family...good clean fun there... That time of year, IMHO I wouldnt worry at all about fishing at night, unless its the only time you can get out. If it is, there are some big sharks you can tango with in the hook. Spanish and bluefish at dawn and dusk, pompano and seamullet during the day...
RichLou
clamming is definitely on the menu. Im originally from Pa and grew up on some good steamed clams. What's the best way to get some great fresh shrimp? (*member formerly known as 'rookie surf')
reel gambler
For eating or fishing? There are shimpers that fish the sound, I believe they even may take charters out for this, not sure...if not just go into buxton seafood or diamond shoals seafood...lots of goodies in both places... RichLou
Bof'em lol. I've caught shrimp in my next in the OBX before but didn't know if they were ok to eat so I just used for bait. When I'm on vacation I like to eat good and fresh local. (*member formerly known as 'rookie surf')
reel gambler
Might want to give rick caton a call from the free agent...I think he used to do the shrimping, not sure if he still does. I would just go to the seafood markets and pick up a couple of pounds and some ole bay, but that is just me...more time for the "family vacation"...hehe... RichLou
I'm good with just buying the shrimp! Lol (*member formerly known as 'rookie surf')
Steve in Mass
For eating shrimp, I have found the best deal is either Frank and Fran's in Avon when he has them or Avon Seafood on the Avon Harbor Rd. The latter has strange hours, so you gotta be there when they are........and if you hit it right (early to mid afternoon) when the fishing boats come in to off load, you can also get all the free crab bait you could ever want......you just have to bring your own bucket. Risky Business in either Avon or Hatteras Village is also a good bet for shrimp, but can be a bit more expensive. RichLou
Is it possible to buy them right at the docks? (*member formerly known as 'rookie surf')
Steve in Mass
Avon seafood IS more or less a dock and distributor. As far as getting them there fresh off the boat as it comes in, I am not sure, I guess it would be how you hit it. Only other port I know off down there is in Wanchese on Roanoke Island, but I could just be uninformed of others. When I bought shrimp at Avon Seafood in the past, it was in bulk and fresh-frozen in 5 lb blocks. But with shrimp, unless you get it fresh within a day or so of it being caught (and when you see it "fresh" in markets, you can't be sure of how long it's been around, whether it has been previously frozen, and the care taken of it to thaw it out), fresh-frozen is the way to go. I do know that when Frank at Franks and Fran's gets "eating shrimp" it is often flash frozen right at the dock, or if and when he DOES have it fresh, he had it in his store the same day it was taken off the boat. RichLou
Thanks Steve. My aunt used to own a retail seafood store and flash frozen was the only shrimp she ever got in. There will be about 8 of us so 5# will be not much of a challenge lol. I just want to be xbke to support local economies as much as possible. RichLou
Can you guys point me in the direction of finding a map of locations to go clamming? I looked at the fisheries page but didn't really see much? (*member formerly known as 'rookie surf')
Tall Paul
Not sure if there are still any clams there or not, but they did/do a lot of clamming up around Canadian hole just out side of Buxton.
