RichLou
Marylandh DNR caught a man with 228 shorts and was convicted. I have mixed emotions on this one. Great job by catching the guy, but I feel that the punishment does not meet the crime? It was not like it was 1 fish and just short, this was a slap in the face of just ignoring the law. http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries/news/story.asp?story_id=389&title=Silver-Spring-Man-Found-Guilty-of-Poaching-228-Undersized-Striped-Bass (*member formerly known as 'rookie surf')
stripedbassking
$2,000 fine...thats it???? Shoulda been $50 bucks a fish. kyle241
Agree that catching him was good but the penalty was nothing much. He'll just go back out and catch more to pay off the fine. To top it off nobody even had a license so it shows what they think of any rules or regulations. I say confiscate his boat and car/truck, that may make him think twice. avid fish
There was 4 guys I think ! Now if this was one of us we would be in JAIL till our grand kids, kids were out of college ! We would lose our house and all possession's. The laws just don't make sense ! Great that they were caught but still there legal size is 18" so the fish they kept wouldn't even make a sandwich, just senseless killing ! JMHO Sorry for the rant just makes me MAD !!!!! bill_1109
I'm sure they "didn't know how to read the regs" if their names are any indication ...let them off way too easy.
fishinambition
$2,000 for fish? It doesnt fit. it's beyond excessive.
Fergal
I'm sure the fine was quite easy to pay with all of the money that they made off of prior catches. It seems that crime does pay, at least when you're a poacher. ASMFC - Destroying public resources and fisheries one stock at a time since 1942. brushfly
Fines I'm afraid have just been another line item in their running their businesses. Fuel, Insurance, Dockage, Wear and Tear, Engine, Registration, Permits (if any), Fines for poaching. Once and only once they get hit real good with heavy fines. Like those that would mean a second loan on their house or jail time or both, will you see it end or be reduced greatly in numbers of crooks operating this way. AtTheBar
Pretty brutal. Personally feel the punishment shouldn't fit the crime instead make an example of them and throw the max penalty at them. Send a message that these actions will not be tolerated or taken lightly instead of sending the message that poaching will result in a small fee if you are caught with your plunder. :rav:
afterhours
fine should be much higher, boat and gear should be confiscated and license should be revoked. Fergal
fine should be much higher, boat and gear should be confiscated and license should be revoked. Yup, lose the boat, the car, and any gear. Fine s/b minimum of $5k for first time offender, if not more. ASMFC - Destroying public resources and fisheries one stock at a time since 1942.
