New from the North Fork of LI

Hi all,

I am new to the site, my name is Dominick. I have been fishing most my life on the east end of the island, but only recently started seriously getting into surf casting. I live on the north fork. I have been fishing the sound beaches on the north fork, and the south fork beaches / jetties the past few years. I am excited to get back out there this year.

I'm in my mid twenties, and my wife is not as into fishing as I am, but she has been a good sport the past few years. I am also looking to learn how to better handle fish, and land more of them. I was hoping there are some people in the area that would be interested in fishing / teaching / spending time with a fellow fisherman and outdoor enthusiast.

I don't think I can reply to pm's yet, but I will reply to them as soon as I can.

cheers  :beers:

I have been fishing the south shore since I was young with my dad, but still struggle. I am hoping I could meet some people who are willing to teach me a few things.  even though I have been fishing out here for years I fell like a complete amateur some times. I have been doing better each year though, so this should be a good season...

Consider also a guide.  There's several good ones in your area, I liked Rob Thompson due to his laid back nature and he's good with kids.  Bring yours and he'll bring his to accompany yours.  Nick Karas is also very good for a serious guided trip.  Lot of good spots by you without having to trek to the southshore, I've always wanted to hit Orient and vicinity for Albies on the Sound, and lots of good stuff on the bay too.

I also second John Skinner's vids too, and search this site too.  Keep a log and remember to write what works and what structure, bait you seen, etc.  And for what it's worth, the last few years have been so-so depending on what you're going after.  Unless you hit a certain area last fall, most of the fall run on the Island sucked.  Good luck!

Sadly Nick Karas passed away last year.

Welcome to SOL. You live by some fishy waters. Take the time to learn the spots before you head to the south fork.

Welcome to SOL as well. There are so many rocky points and rips from Riverhead to Orient Point you can spend a life time fishing them. Pick a few and work them. Have fun, be safe and good luck.

I have fished a lot in riverhead on the sound beaches, my parents live in Riverhead and have been getting the Riverhead off road sticker.  but I still have not been able to find a consistent spot. I have been really hit or miss.  this is probably due to my inconsistent timing and technique.

I only started fishing further east last year from Mattituck to orient, and still do not know the fishing grounds all to well. I do plan on doing some scouting in the next few weeks.

Roman if you, or any one else is out on the north fork and don't mind some one with you;  I'd go scouting some places. I'd also really like to have people to fish with from time to time, I'm usually alone or with my wife who reads a book while I fish.

Thanks for posting that Big Cee - I gave up on Newsday long ago after their relentless attacks on teachers and cops.  I'm sorry to hear of Nick's passing, an outstanding gent and a great sportsman, RIP!
