pakalolo
My wife and I own a small fine gardening company, no employees, just a few contractors. We have a catastrophic policy, 5 K deductible each, and a Health Savings Account , able to put 6 K in per year, so far so good. Got some correspondence from my insurance company, Emblem Health, stating that because of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) AS OF January 1 2014, OUR POLICY WILL NO LONGER BE OFFERED , because it "doesn't include a core set of comprehensive benefits. When combined with the HSA the policy is right for us! This Obamacare sucks.Reading further, a sole proprietor and spouse don't qualify as members of a group, that's how we got the policy in the first place. Seems like a conscious effort to screw the small businessman. Gotta go to NY insurance exchange to get insurance, even though they tell you that it's only for the uninsured. Yu just can't make this *****e up. IN FAVOR OF COMMERCIAL FISHING AND SURFING THE NORTH SIDE MAY THE RICH GET RICHER!! FISH ARE FOOD!! jkrock
I saw a talking head on TV today say that within 5 years no large employer will offer healthcare. We'll all be in the same boat soon enough. Keep rowing "mother Theresa was a POS"-fish'nmagician

NS Mike D
Insurance companies like to use headlines as a reason to cancel policies or raise premiums to deflect from the real reasons they do it. Emblem has long been scaling back it's polices in NY well before anyone ever heard of Obama. They bleed money from a number of big acquisitions and mergers that didn't pan out for them. The fact of the of matter is that healthcare costs have been rising faster than premium revenues for a long time. This is no different that the local gas station rising prices for the gas in their tanks when oil futures rise. The public believes that type of BS. "... let it go - lets move forward." Kings over Queens
Insurance companies like to use headlines as a reason to cancel policies or raise premiums to deflect from the real reasons they do it. Insurance companies need permission from the State Insurance Department to raise rates and must provide justification for cancellation of a policy. It would be a violation of law for them to falsely claim the ACA as the reason if it wasn't. #otterlivesmatter
Roadrunner
I suggest you check out NYS's health insurance exchange, and see what kind of new policy you can get. You might be pleasantly surprised. I'm destined to save more than 70% here in CT. Obama Care may well end up being a back door approach to a Single Payer system. But that suits me just fine, so it bothers me not. If it works in Europe, it can work for us. No, it's because the ACA has standards that policies must meet, and if your doesn't meet it, they add pieces and parts until it's acceptable. And then it is 300X higher. You will still probably be offered coverage by the insurance company, but bend over when they how you the premiums. -

It would be a violation of law for them to falsely claim the ACA as the reason if it wasn't. they can list a number of reasons and send a letter to their holders citing just one. Emblem has had problems for a long time. They could have easily added the additional coverage and raised premiums accordingly in their filings with the State. Any sound business would have given their customers that option. These policies had to be money losers in the first place for them to just up and cancel without seeking to keep the holders willing to pay the additional premium for the additional service. Assuming the State granted the coverage and rate revision, but that aside, if the plan doesn't comply with the ACA, and I don't know if it does or doesn't, but assuming that it doesn't, then the non-renewal notice is accurate and not BS as you allege. #otterlivesmatter

He's self employed which means that he can deduct a large portion of his premium (if not all of it) and fund his HSA with pretax dollars. A private plan via Obamacare would be paid with post tax dollars as would any associated out of pocket cost such as deductible or copays. He's getting screwed sideways, without lube, or a reach around. And no phone call or flowers the morning after. #otterlivesmatter

I don't what "core" health care services are included or not, nor what is required by the ACA. It's only been 2 days and my renewal isn't until March. I ran the numbers yesterday for ***** and giggles and as I suspected the ACA isn't good for my family. We'll see what happens in December when I received my renewal rates (or non renewal) in advance of my March renewal date. Naturally I'll be paying attention. #otterlivesmatter

I've been loosely following Emblems problems for more than a decade. They did a lot of bad acquisitions and have been trying to shutter a number of these lousy legacy plans for some time now. I'm skeptic that the Affordable Care Act is the sole reason the plan mentioned is being dropped. "... let it go - lets move forward."
