CroMonty
Maybe silly question and impossible to answer but what Penn's reel in your own criterion you consider best they ever made...?! Older USA made models are regarded like tanks with tough gears and are some kind of sentimental reminder on some past time, though newer models have all kind of fancy modern features like instant a/r, nicer line lay, better drags, more efficient line rollers etc. but are mainly made in China. How do you give your vote on this - top model Torque, immortal Z's, numeruos Spinfishers or something else...?! I never forget a face, but in your case I'll be glad to make an exception! gregmorin
Torque spinners! All the modern improvements, sealed drag and gear box, exceptional gears, smooth strong drag, very smooth retrieve, great line lay and easy to work on yourself. redfin
That is a hard question to answer. Best to the company or best to the guy using it? I guess the Torque would be the best from a technology standpoint. Hands down. I don't think the Torque will make them a lot of money. I think they have it because they have to offer something high end. The Z series was modestly priced and more durable than just about anything in it's day and far beyond that. It put a lot of fisherman in the game with a reel that lasted a very long time. It would have to rate high on the list of "best" for that reason. Sadly, nothing else they make really shines IMO. The best they ever offered would have to be a toss up between these two. I think if they got serious with the SSV and put a better drive train in there, that reel could have out shined both the old Z and the pricey Torque and could have possible been the very best they offered to date. FISH BUCKET
i'm reserving judgement till longcast reel is released
woodwker99
If I can add my 2 pennies. I would rate the 704/706 reels as the best spinners Penn has ever made for surf fishermen. The spin fisher line were all tanks and for the time and the money, some of the best on the market. I don't own a torque YET, but it is on my wish list in the bail-less model. The new Spinfisher V's are looking good even as Penn irons out the bugs. And the longcast looking like a winner too. I know I love using my 6500 on the beach. Not a swimmer so I for one feel it really fits what I wanted . I still wont let go of my drilled 704 thou.

Cfire06
I agree totally with Big Bill! I have multiple penn 704, a 706 and a 710 they are workhorses! Affordable tough and non intimidating to work on. They make reeling in the larger blues and bass a breeze and still look like what in my opinion a fishing reel should. When you hook 20 lbs blues, 50 lbs bass and anything else that comes along a little plastic reels would make me nervous. Also nothing like a reel proudly made in the USA. That whole line of reels is tops in my book.

mbg60
During their era's, Penn reels were the bomb. Spinfishers, Jigmasters, Senators, SS series,Internationals, and now the Torque. Maybe a better "value" for the older models mentioned VS the Torque but the Torque is a solid reel.
ekelly33
Z Series...no comparison...what other reel has stood the test of time that these have!
cnnashman
Since the threads titled " best ever" it's got to be the Torque but most popular and trustworthy i would have to say the Z series.
PENN King
spinfishers and senators they have proven quality over and over for years and hold records. All I use is Penn, Zebco Brands and Tibor Fly Reels.
Sudsy
706. What other surf reel can claim the number of 30 / 40 year old + reels that are still in operation ??
