Keltan
Those with green seal have written this on them NMB R - 1350 S and S is for Martensitic Stainless Steel which is not bad and I guess what the tolerance is in them .Bearings are in different sizes, and depending on the manufacturer of the disc. some are metric some Inch .Many of this match for reel s , last what I was doing and I remember that I was on Okuma DS 60 surf , replaced the bushing under the spool with 3 bearings. And I added another one bearing in line roller .Who cares now , when they damage will modify them again, I have a lot of them. This is just part of what I collected. I forgot, there are excellent bearings in video recorders . Do you remember what it was [img= These rings are perfect for rod building, can be used for the handle, at least I intend.. I do not know with what are coated, but they look beatiful. . And likely that they are so highly resistant in a variety of conditions . . Some bearing is in housing, two of thus is a perfect for shaft for custom handle knob . . .. being with four bearings but it does not bother anybody .I have saved somewhere already finished knob, but I can not find where I left them. . . I'm sorry. As soon as find them . . .. . some turned out beautiful and functional . I almost forgot, the disc is a perfect mirror for the fishing bag, can not break, and perhaps you will need once, I always have with me one . At first I thought to open this topic in reel maintenance, feel free to move there.I know that on the forum has a lot of guys who do custom. . . Sudsy
And the magnet is perfect for magging the old Penns (a'la Grandpa Old Spook) I've done a few, here's a picture of one (do a search for the write up) I just wanta play everyday despite small nagging injuries -- and go home to a woman who appreciates how full of crap I truly am. ~ Crash Davis Social Distancing since 1962

I keep one with me on the kayak as a daytime emergency flasher. The hole in the middle helps you line it up to the target. Haven't needed it yet (thank God) I just wanta play everyday despite small nagging injuries -- and go home to a woman who appreciates how full of crap I truly am. ~ Crash Davis Social Distancing since 1962
CanadaEh
very interesting, never thought old harddrives could be useful in ... fishing how many ball bearings can be salvage from 1 hardrive? I can't believe this all came from one hardrive in the picture below. Do they vary greatly in the size and how easy is it to find one suitable for particular reel? buz23
I would hesitate before using a martensitic stainless steel for salt water. The martensitics are typically lower chrome (12% in many cases), little to no nickel and so are much less corrosion resistant than your usual 304 or 316 austenitic (18 Cr, 8 or 12 Ni) stainless steels. The martensitic steels can be much harder and tougher, but I think what we mostly need in SW applications is the corrosion resistance. Maybe it doesn't make much difference if you depend on the lubricant to protect against rust.
