Morning Tide With Ron Arra

I am a surfcaster. When I was young it was by necessity , but now it is by choice. I love the feel of the drag peeling off my reel at false dawn with my feet planted on my favorite rock. I love challenge of successfully landing a cow bass in the riprap. I enjoy the challenge of pushing my body and gear to their limits - and occasionally beyond them.

Over the years I have gained confidence through my experiences. Expectations have evolved, and I find appreciation in the opportunities I have to enjoy the outdoors.

I found myself at my physical limits of my natural casting abilities. I regularly cast "in the middle" of the Canal, but the physical output required to achieve this has taxed my shoulder. I was in need of a coach.

I made a commitment to hire a true professional, Ron Arra. Over several emails the 5 time national distance champion and I discussed my objectives and agreed to meet at a beach for a lesson on casting technique. Conditions were not ideal and location #1 was replaced by the water both Ron and I fish regularly. The Cape Cod Canal.

I was surprised at the simple things I learned. For example:

-Ron uses a leader much shorter than what I typically use.

-Ron ties a uni-uni for his leader to braid (most Canal rats, including myself use a barrel swivel)

-With Ron's technique it requires much less effort, with additional distance achieved.

Overall, it was a great experience that I wish I had invested in earlier in my fishing career. I would reccomend his service to anyone that wants to improve their form and technique. Ron is a natural teacher, his lessons are very straightforward and informative. Hire a guide and catch a fish, hire a teacher and improve your technique forever! When your lesson is over, you will have a new friend.

I am glad to hear about the uni to uni knot for mono/braid connections. I have used it for years jigging cod, but it was never really tested (65 lb braid to 50 lb leader could be heavily weakened and it would not matter on a 15lb fish). I double the braid when I tie the knot. Now I am going to go try it with 20 lb braid!

no swivel? just a clip on the end of the leader?

Ron (and I) both fish with only a breakaway style clip at the buisness end of the leader. I have been doing this for years with no problems.
