Atheists to erect monument at Bradford County, FL courthouse - Page 16

Brutal Dictators generally have two paths to go down, one is to claim they are God's instrument on Earth and they are doing his will, the other is to neuter Religion........ since most religions have a heirarchy and members follow their spiritual leaders, those leaders need to be neutered. so you can claim that you are higher up the food chain than they are, and compell the religious leaders to back the claim, or you can denounce the religion.

You don't have to ask. Messiah's already know what you're thinking before you ask. They have PRISM to make sure of that.

Don't be ridiculous. He didn't need PRISM to listen in on my Obamaphone, they come pre-bugged.

Great response.

No doubt religious organizations were an obstruction to their goals, but historically they can be replaced with other religious and quasi-religious organizations acheiiving the same ends, as has happened many times. The assumption that using atheism as tool to remove roadblocks assumes that the leaders of these movements were insincere in their atheistic convictions. It also assumes that their desire to spread this belief as part of their overarching movement was purely pragmatic. What we do know is that they all incorporated atheism as a cornerstone or their revolutions. I think that's enough to consider atheism another belief system that can be used to nefarious ends and to show that ideological atheism isn't a superior solution to the human condition anymore than any other belief system. Given their track record of failures, maybe worse than the ideologies they replaced.

The rest of the who's who of evil despots used suppression of religion as a tool to control the masses. It was means, not an end. It was not an issue of theology. Their utopian visions were the goal and religion was a roadblock.

That is not to say that atheists are some sort of special beast. They are human just like everyone else. There's evil pricks and good people as youd find in any other collection of people. Some have undoubtably been brutal dictators. Yet, even still, historically, we haven't seen much by the way of atheists grouping up and militantly spreading their religious beliefs with violence.

That being said, the meme was kind of funny because while nonviolent, atheists seem to be particularly boorish on the interwebs.

Well, the wait is over. They unveiled their monument. I actually DID learn something from it...I learned that atheists look a lot like homos.

"... assumes that their desire to spread this belief ..."

if atheism is a belief, then it is... um... a religion

your own choice of words supporting your claim presupposes it.

I have to agree. A belief system.

Banning "religion" from all public discourse and property is establishing atheism as state religion.

"The assumption that using atheism as tool to remove roadblocks assumes that the leaders of these movements were insincere in their atheistic convictions."

They probably don't give a damn.  They know that the won't be going "...to Heaven, whatever the Hell that is." *

If this is the best they've got, they're not going to be winning any intellectual awards. Those comments assume so many incorrect things that it's just embarrassing.

They might not care about what happens to them after they die, but it would be wrong to assume that they didn't care about what happened while they lived or the legacy they left afterward.

I read the thing this time.

Here's my train of thought:  "poverty banished"; atheist; Ayn Rand; right wing; food stamp program.   confused.gif

In a surprise move, the House farm bill was defeated on a 195-234 vote, largely because of proposed changes to the country's popular food stamp program used by 48 million Americans. Some Republicans have said the estimated $2 billion in annual cuts to the program are not enough, while Democrats said they were too steep. The full Senate, which passed its bill earlier in June, reduced the program by $400 million each year.

"Definition of monument

noun

a statue, building, or other structure erected to commemorate a famous or notable person or event.

a statue or other structure placed by or over a grave in memory of the dead.

a building, structure, or site that is of historical importance or interest:   the amphitheater is one of the many Greek monuments in Sicily

an outstanding, enduring, and memorable example of something:          recordings that are a monument to the art of playing the piano

Origin:

Middle English (denoting a burial place): via French from Latin monumentum, from monere 'remind'

2 cents:

A "monument" to 10 fabled commandments.  Number one:  "No Gods before me" therefore violates (may violate, imply, perception, etc...) 1st ammendment.

A bench about nothing except to counter an assertion based on myth and legendary spaceman: just to agitate?

All seems very silly.

Agreed. This is a major reason why as an atheist I have no interest in atheist organizations such as American Atheists.
