so after the Torque thread and a buncha posts about even line lay and "hips" on a reel- whats the deal with using washers to even out the way my line sits on the spool?? what washers and where?? can any reel do it?? how much difference does it make??

thanks- Bob

Hey Bob,

Not every reel can be "shimmed" but many have the spool resting on a "stand" on top of the main shaft. Usually there are one or more washers on this stand that support the spool.

If you have a VS "hourglass" with line bunched up top and bottom you are kinda stuck. But if it is predominantly on the top you can add a washer/shim underneath to lift up the spool a tiny bit at a time.

This spreads out the line at the top of the spool better. When the line is stacking on top of itself the loops slap together more as they come off during a cast. This hurts casting distance and allows loops with twist in them to interact more together and with the first guide which leads to a higher incidence of wind knots.

Depending on your fishing style and what lures/line you use (and how free rolling your line roller is), you may naturally create a lot of twist and this is a critical issue, or you may not have to worry as much as some.

Bob, don't confuse the way line favors more to the front of a spool ( decrease the amount of washers) or the back of a spool (increase the amount of washers) with a reels oscillation system, they are not the same. It's the oscillation system and it's way of wrapping line onto a spool that is whats important in casting distance , not whether a reel wraps more to the back or front.

Like the above poster stated, the Spinfisher V is a reel that allows you to shim the spool , thus altering the line shape on the spool, but that doesn't mean the Spinfisher V is all of a sudden going to be able to hang with the best worm driven oscillation equipped reels when distance is being compared.

Adjusting line winding shape helps in dealing with wind knots as it can more evenly lay the line but the reel is still a 1:1 ratio type reel and not a 2:1 worm driven type.

mostly thinking of my Cabo 60 in comparison to my (brandy-new) Ultegra XSC.... the line lay is way nicer on the Shimano and seemingly casts much better as well (in addition to a bunch of other factors)..... is it worth the effort?

Well that Shimano has aerowrap II oscillation so it's a worm driven system, that oscillation system is outstanding . Now regarding the winding shape, i have found through much experimentation with my Sustain FE which also utilizes the aerowrap II system that adding or subtracting a washer has not made any noticeable difference in distance and most reels are setup well from the factory, imo of course.

Shimano includes a variety of washers , some thin and some thicker, adding or subtracting one makes very subtle differences and usually doesn't equate to anything notable distance wise.

From the Shinano (EU) website:

How to adjust winding shape of line

Upon delivery, the line is set to wind to an optimum shape. However, with the help of attached washers, the winding shape can be adjusted as

illustrated below to suit individual preferences. With lines made of fluorocarbon and other hard substances, it is best to set the line to wind more to the front of the spool to avoid the problem of backlash.

A. Setting upon delivery

B. To set to wind more to the front Reduce the number of washers on the spool shaft

C. To set to wind more to the back Increase the number of washers on the spool shaft

The above shows what i said at the beginning of post # 4. If using braid (which i believe most are) the real world differences in overall casting distance is so subtle that despite adding or subtracting a washer it's proved to be a non issue to me.

I compared distances by spooling heavily to the back and front on my Sustain FE (a reel that utilizes the same oscillation) off my dock and it was too close to call . I was throwing light line to minimize any issues with guide placement on the rod i was using and was getting great distance with all line shape patterns. Obviously due to the aerowrap II oscillation and not line shape preferences.

Hi Guys, I've recently run into this issue with my Maxel 16K spool on a stella (2008).

The line is stacked up on it like shown in the image above on spool C.

I added one washer and it has made no difference. I let out all the line under heavy current and re-stacked it, and it still came out exactly the same.

I'll now strip all the line off w/ a drill and add 2 - 3 more washers and hopefully that makes a difference.

Not so......

I already have a shimano Stella. I bought a 16000 spool for it for additional line capacity. Unfortunately it's not laying the line evenly on this spool. was hoping someone had already faced this issue and figured out a solution.

You probably need to

The solution is to shim the spool with the shims provided.
