What is your favorite ice catch?  I love 2lb. yellow perchdrool.gif, but finger perch make the best bait!!

Any fish caught thru the ice is a good thing. But YP and trout are the best eating of the bunch. Looks like we'll get decent hardwater by next weekend in my neck of the woods (Hopkinton). Maybe in SE mass too, in certain spots.

I see ice making in the future for sure!

This will be my first year trying ice fishing, but I am a longtime recreational ice sailor with a lot of experience about ice thickness, ect.

I was wondering if we could start a thread with reports of what ice thickness people are experiencing on outtings.

I will make reports for the SE Mass region and Cape.

Usually I would be ice sailing, but there are so many days we go where there is no wind, I will be sure to have my fishing gear.

So, my 1st report: Saturday, Lake Winnecunnet , Norton, I saw 3/4" ice over 90% of lake except inlet. I know it got dumped with 8-10" but that could have wetted out and may be safe in a few days.

There should be PLENTY of ice by the weekend with the temps heading into the teens/single digits this week,.......clapping.gif

I'm thinking Hubbardston or Rutland should have plenty of stiff ice

Hubbardston has ice stopped by 2 places today. 3+ inches on both. One had a bout 3 inches of snow over the ice.

Going. Scouting today

There are still a lot of ponds that aren't uniformly frozen, even in central MA, even though they may look "safe." Early in the season, 4 inches of ice can go to 1 inch or less in just a few feet of walking. Chop test holes when walking out to make sure you aren't walking on water icon24.gif.

Very true, a few of us were walking out on South pond a few years ago and it was safe(or so we thought).  We are not small people  and still to this day have no clue how the ice held us, but it was 5in. of ice for the first 200yds from shore.  We weren't paying attention and walked within 10 ft. of open water in 60ft+ of water...  first and last time I went out on South Pond ....
