Best rod/reel combo for Striped Bass Fishing - 8/22/2012

Hello, long time reader and first time poster to this forum.  I recently got hooked (pun intended) to the sport/hobby of fishing and now I wanted to reach out to the Stripersonline community to recommend a decent rod/reel combo for Striped Bass fishing / Surf fishing.  I have been fishing at Jones Beach fishing station pier and Captree pier (Long Island NY) with a Shimano Zircos rod/reel combo (which I picked up at a discount) with not much luck (decent sized sea robin and a couple of small sea bass).

Can anyone recommend a good all around rod/reel combo for Striped bass/ surf fishing?  Looking to spend around $200.  Much thanks in advance.

W hat type of fishing are you doing? Spinning or conventional ? What weight are you throwing or want to throw?

Check out the Tica rods great rods for the price around $100.00

$200 doesn't leave a lot of choices if you decide to go with braid a 300 yd spool will run you at least $25-30. You might want to go used. A nice Penn slammer 360 for around $100.00 they have some good deals on the BST but being your a newbie you can't buy or sell until your a member in good standings for 7 days & have at least 15 posts.

Welcome to the site!

Welcome to SOL. Look into the tsunami airwave series or st. croix triumph surf series rods. You can find them in the BST for less than $100 if you have the patience. For reels I like shimano stradic FI or FJ. These are my recommendations for a budget surf outfit.

Hi flytyingguy1, I'd really like to dabble into the conventional fishing space, but suspect I may not be experience enough yet.  In terms of weights, something I can use to throw as far as possible to get past the seaweed (when I do pier fishing).

Thanks I will look into the Tica rods. I'd really like a combo that will be good for all around fishing striped bass, blue fish, weak fish, fluke/flounder, black fish, seabass from the pier, jetty or surf. Is the Tica + Penn slammer good for this?

Hey j0k3r, thanks I will take a look into the above rod + reel combos.  Is that combo good for all around fishing from pier, jetty, surf?

Regarding the Penn Slammers, what is the major difference between the models?  360 v 460 v 560 v 760?  I see that they're all similarly priced as well.

Size the 360 is a nice size and the 460 is bigger & would use on a 10-10-1/2 rod the 560 is to big in my option & the 760 is Hugh. The 360 is about the same size as a 5000 size Shimano. The older ones IMO are better than the newer. The older ones are USA made. ,,

Also remember that one set up will not do everything. But this combo will work for what your looking for.

Hey, good luck with your new hobby. I am new to the site and surf fishing as well so take my advice with a grain of salt. Penn Spinfishers are on sale at tackle direct for $59. These are pretty good reels from what I have read for a beginner. And you could pick up an Ugly Stick for about $50. That will leave you at 110 with 90 left over for line and a few plugs or soft baits. This should be at least adequate in my opinion as a beginner.

Thanks flytyingguy, can you recommend a retailer (preferably online) that can sell me the Tica rods?  I am having a hard time finding a retailer.

Check out the Penn Spinfisher series, its being marked down all over because the Spinfisher V is about to be released. You can get at $100+ reel for under $80

How is the quality of the Spinfisher compared to the Slammer model?  I am willing to pay more for quality (shame these reels aren't made in the US anymore)
