Big joe,

Anyway I could disuade you form buying a kit. Often there will be a ton of material for which you have no use but will have paid for.

Buy a decent vise it does not have to cost the earth then decide which flies you want to tye most of. Make a bom list ( Bill of material List) and buy that. Then at least to start with you don't over spend and you don't have materials lying around you will not ever use.

Salt water wise I decided I just wanted to tye Deceivers and Clousers for a while at least. I put my money into the very best Bucktail I could track down. I put fly tying kits into the same catergory as ready to go fishing rod kits as not very helpful.

Big Joe,

May I suggest that you avoid the kit route...The vise will frustrate you. I would reccomend that you look into the following vises and buy a few tools incluciing scissors, bodkin and bobbin.

-Super II vise (imported available at various places for under $50 with 3 sets of jaws) This was my first vise...I used it for a couple of years and it served me well.

-Terra Rotery Vise (Best under $50 true rotery option-Not a bad vise)

-Anvil Apex (under $100) Has both clamp and pedastal base-good value

-Davise (Under $100 true rotery)

-*Peak Vise (Under $150-True Rotery)

-*Dyna-king Kingfisher (under $150)

* Best quality/price ratio (a vise you could use for many years or a lifetime-buy if you are able)

I also reccomend looking into buying these vises used (I have purchased vises on this site-other stes as well)

I have used/owned all of these vises in the past and cal vouch for their quality for intended use.

Once you get your tools...send me a message and I'll send you a starter package of materials for clousers and such to get you started.

I got myself the Renzetti traveller vise which I find very pleasant to use.

For tools I use Dr Slick, and Rite bobbins.

From my perspective I like nicer equipment as it make the occasions I sit down and tie more pleasurable, also the better kit is less likely to leave you with a broken thread, loose hook or something else that will frustrate you when you are concentrating on tying up a nice fly.
