Pittsburgh area bass fishing?

Thread Starter
So I'm transferring to the University of Pittsburgh for this fall semester (spent the past few years getting my act together and saving 40k at a community college just outside Philly) and am looking for some fishing grounds (couldn't make it through the school year without fishing). Mostly just do bass and pretty much only lures. I was thinking about trying to hunt out some smallmouth holes along the smaller rivers and streams like the Yough. I'm going to have to do a lot of scouting but I will have a car out there with me so I'll be mobile.

Anyone want to give any tips about the fishing out there? Any kind of info would be appreciated as I know nothing about the area.

Hoping to find some decent spots before the fall bite.

Can't give you any specific pointers about fishing in that area, never fished there myself, but I recall that one of the Bassmaster Classics several years back was right there on the 3 rivers in Pittsburgh, so there's potential. smile.gif

From the Classic reporting for the 2005 Bassmaster's Classic in Pittsburg:

"Kevin VanDam edged out second place finisher Aaron Martens by only 6-ounces, with a three day total weight of 12-pounds, 15-ounces from 11 bass. The low weight set a new Bassmaster Classic record for lowest weight in a tournament. Most of the bass were caught on the Monongahela River, with bridge piers providing the favorite fishing spots".

Wouldn't get my hopes up about catching a bunch if these guys couldn't do it. Maybe in the fall it will be better. This was during last week of July, Tightlines.

I am north of Pgh and yes those fishing the Bassmasters Tourney didn't catch any of size but there are plenty of places around with decent size bass. If you PM me I'll suggest a couple local sources but to mention a few spots (broadly), the upper Allegheny River (way above the dams and locks) hold lots of fish, especially smallies. As does the Yough. Lots of lakes and ponds around Pgh hold largemouths. If you get time, head up to Lake Erie for football sized smallies on the main lake or Presque Isle Bay.

Lake Arthur, north of Pgh holds lots of largemouth as well as muskie and stripers.

French Creek, further north, holds smallies, rock bass, muskie, pike and others.

The three rivers around Pgh do hold lots of fish but the smallies are more difficult to find. Fish the bridge abutments and cast towards the tree lined shore if you can get in a boat or a kayak. You might want to try for carp and catfish in those rivers around the city.

Anyway, let me know if you want a couple more local to Western PA sites.
