Dead turtles was ashore

Thread Starter
Four dead sea turtles have washed ashore on beaches in New Jersey.

Three loggerhead sea turtles and one leatherback sea turtle were found Sunday on beaches in Spring Lake, Island Beach State Park in Berkeley, North Wildwood and the Townsends Inlet area of Sea Isle City.

The loggerhead sea turtles weighted between 30 and 45 pounds each and that the leatherback, found in Townsends Inlet, weighed about 245 pounds.

I hate to speculate but there has been a ton of boat traffic on the bluefin grounds off those areas the past couple of weeks. The weather was nice and the waves flat which enables people to run at full speed if they want to. Did the turtles look like they died from a disease or did they have a a gash wound?

I know we were out 2 weeks ago and I must have seen at least 100 loggerheads out there during an 8 hour troll...... Saw at least 1 turtle that looked dead but it's not like I went over and knocked on his shell to verify that. Normally they will swim down once you get close but this guy just laid there with his head underwater.

We haven't had a sustained east wind like we have had over the past week during this time of year in a very, very long time. Everything that floats within a hundred miles is probably washing up. I dont see it as a spike in sea turtles deaths, nor is there medical waste being "dumped at sea". This is probably par for the course of what is always going on with our ocean. I'd like to see the autopsies of the turtles though. I'd be willing to bet there is some human cause for at least some of them.

My guess would be a gut full of plastics and a longline hook in the throat. One/two combo.

That's not a bad guess. I don't think it was longliners though because the area we saw over a hundred loggerheads was only 45 miles out and the longliners are in the canyons which are 75-90 miles out. Not sure if the longlines are even working the northern canyons yet as well. The plastic comment makes some sense as there is always a ton of plastic floating around out there, especially "boardwalk" balloons.........
